Anyone ever been? I'm going in December for a week. Any tips relating to cuisine or site-seeing or, well, anything? Huw, don't you live there? |

Yes, I live in Taiwan! I assume you'll be in Taipei, Gary? Let me know where you'll be and I'll see what I can think of in the way of sightseeing, food and drink, haunted houses and what not... or you can email me. It's a pity you're not coming over during the ghost month... |

I'll email you closer to the time, Huw, and we can figure it out. If you're based nearby, we could meet for a drink and a beetle kebab! |

Great - I look forward to that, Gary! Although I think the local stinky tofu and congealed pig's blood fritters might be tastier than the beetle kebabs... |

Gary, for an interesting souvenir yet perhaps a niche interest, there is in the area of Taipei's famous night market an old family cutlery company called "Shilin Cutter", and they handmake beautiful classic chinese-style folding pocket knives since decades. I understood that they were not too expensive yet sturdy. Huw, do you know the shop I'm talking about? Here's a link with small pictures: http://taipeitravel.net/user/article.aspx?Lang=2&SNo=05000494 If my info is correct, the address is No.74, Dabei Rd., Shilin Dist., Taipei City 111 I admit that it's one of my more peculiar interests ! |

Gary, I'm not familiar with Yangming University, but if it's on or near Yangmingshan (Yangming Mountain), then it's probably not too far from the place I went to way back in the '80s, Chinese Culture University. I used to live up there, but haven't been back in years. I live in a city south of Taipei called Hsinchu. Tom, I used to haunt the Shilin night market frequently in my student days, but I don't think I've ever seen that knife shop. I haven't been back to the market in ages, but it used to be a really interesting place to wander and get lost in (it's like a maze). The cheap food and beer there was fantastic, but the nearby rat and cockroach-infested cinema left something to be desired (I expect it's better now!). |

Pigs blood fritters? Is that just what we call black pudding? here's a question - if you just drained the pig of a half a pint of blood and let it go on its way oinking happily, and made your black pudding from the blood you've just collected, as no animal has died to make it, is that black pudding vegetarian? |

I think Gary may have a job getting that through customs if he takes it in his hand luggage! |
