Anyone seen this new French film about a group of Russian Jewish classical musicians who were blacklisted by Brezhnev's anti-Semitic bureaucrats in 1980 and attempt a comeback as an orchestra through an unlikely but inspired scam? It's totally brilliant: wildly funny, politically thoughtful, unexpectedly moving and with moments of inspired farce as well as deep sadness. The concluding concert scene – intercut with images from other times and places – is stunningly effective. Ramsey, have you seen this? |
