We saw this on the big screen today at the Watershed Cinema's 'Sunday Brunch With Dennis Hopper' season - the tickets were £4 but as a tribute (?) to the late star of Easy Rider and Apocalypse Now we got £1 each off the full breakfast they do in the cafe.

I haven't seen Blue Velvet since it came out in 1986 and I have to say that today's screening was greatly enhanced by the presence of the lovely Lady P, who told me she would love to see the scenes between barking mad Dennis and effete Dean Stockwell re-enacted by myself and Gary McMahon, but perhaps the most uniquely Lynchian entertainment on offer was a barking mad old lady in the audience who kept talking to the screen. Frances Bay and Priscilla Pointer were ordered to 'Leave him alone' as they berated a beaten up Kyle MacLachlan coming down to breakfast, but her greatest vehemence was saved for dear old Dennis himself, who was repeatedly ordered to 'Stop swearing!'.

I did wonder at one point if perhaps it was David Lynch himself who had come into this rare screening of one of his earlier films in disguise, but she actually turned out to be a big Dennis Hopper fan. 'I saw him in Easy Rider when it first came out you know young man' she said to me when I went back into the auditorium at the end to retrieve my forgotten umbrella to find she was still sitting there. She'd had a lovely time and so had I and I'm sure Mr Lynch himself would have smiled on our rather weird exchange.

This tale is possibly more surreal than the film itself. Which is saying a great deal, given that the 'Rory Award' was surely created after Douglas Adams saw the film.

The probable original title of the film was Fucking Blue Fucking Velvet Fuck, but the marketing department must have put their foot down at some point.

Love this movie more, on each infrequent re-watching. One of the great tragedies too (to me, but not to Lynch, apparently) concerning the removed footage, which amounts to very much, and is illuminating and further clarifying, apparently.... It's rumored Lynch has it all, but he also denies it too; one thing seems sure either way, he never wants it to see the light of day.

For example, and I think I posted this before - the famous Italian poster, which depicted a scene that never made it into the final cut: http://www.cinemadelsilenzio.it/index.php?mod=poster&id=4076

WHen I saw Zatoichi, I was sat in front of two older ladies, one of whom insisted on giving a running commentary to the other: 'Oh Beryl [seriously], he's just cut his head off! Did you see that?'; 'Beryl, he's stabbed him even though he can't see!' and my personal favouite, 'Beryl, he's knocked the door over onto that poor man!'.

Great poster, Craig! Although I wonder if that's actually a scene from the original cut or just Italian advertising?

Or wishful thinking in the part of the poster artist?

Seriously, Kate, I think it's from the original cut. If you search online, or maybe it's on the dvd too? can't remember, but you will see tantalizing stills of scenes that were clearly shot, but never included. And there's enough stills around this poster's depiction, that it must have been filmed, I think. (Lynch's script can also be found easily online, which, thankfully, includes [? - one, again, can only safely conjecture] all the excised footage.)

I remember reading about this poster ages ago, and apparently the scene was never shot.
