My wife and I enjoyed a bar of Galaxy and 'Asylum' on DVD last night. I hadn't seen the film for quite a few years, but I have to say we absolutely adored it! It's got me in quite a mood for classic British horror. I just ordered From Beyond the Grave, Horror Express, Torture Garden and Dead of Night - all for less than £15 from Amazon. I already have Vault of Horror, Dr Terror's House of Horrors and The House That Dripped Blood, so I shall be indulging in some old-fashioned scares these coming weekends. |

Less than £15 each or in total? |

The one thing I really remember about Asylum is the hand of a crew member explicitly in shot moving one of the dismembered limbs about on the floor when they turn on the killer... I forget the plot now to tell the truth. |

I do love portmanteau or anthology films. They're the ideal vehicle for short story adaptations. |

"...when they turn on the killer" Dismembered limbs do it for me too. |

That should be severed limbs, shouldn't it? |

I remember seeing an American anthology film when I was maybe 13ish. I'm guessing it was made in the late 80s and was tied together by a college professor (or something) lecturing a small group of students one night about "the meaning of fear". I remember one story involved a group of girls being chased by dogs when lost one night in the backstreets of a city. And that's about it. If anyone can remember what this movie may have been I'd like to see it again because I know I enjoyed it at the time. |

No, it definitely wasn't that. Not least because I'm 32. |

Oh I love those portmanteau films too and Asylum is great fun, with "Lucy Comes to Stay" and "The Mannikins" being the high points. I think From Beyond the Grave is the best of the Amicus films and I want a giant temple door for a stationery cupboard someday! The House That Dripped Blood has a strange profusion of cravats, although Christopher Lee clearly refused to wear one. LOL |

I do love portmanteau or anthology films. They're the ideal vehicle for short story adaptations. Me too, and I'm surprised that in a Hollywood movie culture where audiences will apparently be bored by anything more than the title card of a film appearing for slightly less time than it takes to read it the format hasn't been revived, especially as big budget blocknusters are now so long you could easily tell four or five stories within a typical 150 minute running time. |

So, here's the question - You're making a portmanteau horror film. What 5 stories do you select as your segments? All the stories must fit together; you can't have an Aickman next to a Laymon, for example. The golf sequence in Dead of Night is jarring, I feel. |

Thanks Steve. (Deep sigh.) Credit card, are you ready for some action? Don't look like that. I don't mean like Friday, this is something more prudent. It's an investment. Hey, look at me when I'm talking to you. And don't say 'remember Brighton' in that tone of voice... |

Deadtime Stories, by Wes Craven, was being tipped to re-kindle the interest in portmanteau horror. But though I remember seeing a lengthy trailer for it online at least 12 months ago, I can find no trace of it on any horror movie websites at present. Not a good sign, I fear. |

Glad to see that, Gary. Means it's not been canned. I apologise, by the way - obviously it's Romero not Craven. Getting my horror maestros mixed up. |

Paul - are you thinking of 'Tales That Will Tear Your Heart Out' - the aborted antho project Craven was going to do with Roy Frumkes and which had some pictures published in Fango back in 1982 under the title Bloody Pulp? |

Let's see, the Top 10 portmanteau horror films imo: 1. 'Black Sabbath' (1963) by Mario Bava 2. 'From Beyond The Grave' (1973) by Kevin Connor 3. 'Dead Of Night' (1945) by Alberto Cavalcanti 4. 'Dr Terror's House Of Horrors' (1965) by Freddie Francis 5. 'Torture Garden' (1967) by Freddie Francis 6. 'Asylum' (1972) by Roy Ward Baker 7. 'Creepshow' (1982) by George A. Romero 8. 'The Monster Club' (1981) by Roy Ward Baker 9. 'The House That Dripped Blood' (1971) by Peter Duffell 10. 'Vault Of Horror' (1973) by Roy Ward Baker I’d also like to put in a word for ‘The League Of Gentlemen’ Christmas Special and, of course, the phenomenal ‘Psychoville’ as excellent examples of portmanteau horror, taking not a little inspiration from the above. |
