I was just looking through the choices for the top ten greatest British horror films, and I wondered what would be everybody's choice for number one. The Wicker Man? Or is that too obvious? What about the top ten American horror films? Maybe 'The Exorcist'. A friend of mine thinks Friedkin's 'Bug' to be one of the best horror films, though Friedkin doesn't consider it an out and out horror film. |

Is there a film called THE QUATERMASS EXPERIMENT?... I'd vote for maybe QUATERMASS AND THE PIT. And I'd go for ROSEMARY'S BABY, too, in the U.S. |

UK: Dead of Night (1945) OK, I know it's not a technically brilliant film as a whole, but it's the first of it's kind - a real ground-breaking film in my opinion - which later led to all the Amicus (and other) anthology series films. And, of course, it has that classic ventriloquist's dummy sequence - one of those 'once-you've-seen-it-you-never-forget-it' pieces. US: Frankenstein (1931) Again, there are better films technically but this was another first of its kind as far as I'm concerned. The performance from Boris Karloff is, of course, what everyone remembers - this has gone on to define what we consider to be Frankenstein's creature ever since. A true great! |

Goodness! Look at all these films to watch! These are just the kinds of lists I've been waiting for! I shall print them out and run, not walk, to my local library.... Sorry, I just can't bring myself to spell it without the E, even if that is the proper title..! Sorry, Stephen, it wasn't - I actually hadn't heard this title - I looked it up, and realized it's The Creeping Unknown, which yes, of course, is a great film.... |

I love 'Spookies' and have it on DVD! One of those films that creates its own nightmarishly absurd reality. I imagine it as the kind of film a young David Lynch would have made with his college mates had he ever got into alcohol in a big way. |

Stevie - was Spookies the one where the spider woman in the basement literally sucks a man dry (not in that way, those of you with a filthy mind). The way his face collapsed made me feel a bit sick when I saw it as a kid... |

The Wicker Man, yes... However, Robert Wise's The Haunting seems to make all the lists of UK horror films despite having a predominately American cast and director. |

Thanks to Lord P, I recently had the oppurtunity to watch Martyrs, and if they had shaved even ten minutes from the torture section, it would have been way more effective. Still quite something though - and I think it could be a USA remake proof film... |

Craig, Possession is uniquely disturbing! Hated it when I first saw it, but later became a fan of Zulawski's work - although they're not horror, films like The Third Part of the Night and That Most Important Thing: Love have a disturbing intensity. His film Devil apparently makes Ken Russell's The Devils look like a model of restraint, but I haven't had a chance to see it yet. |

Actually, Frank, tell me if it's any good - I'm actually bizarrely desirous of seeing it - though I'd feel embarrassed and ashamed, like the time they caught me and Paul Reubens at that movie theater - er, what? |

Paul Reubens as in Pee Wee Herman? I knew you had to be in on that little sleazy escapade. After all, you're a screenplay writer (; |
