I'm going and Zed might be. The Strantzas probably will be there and he mentioned Richard Gavin might go, too....

...after all how much trouble can we all get into in Texas.

Ramsey. Are you going?

I was talking to F Paul Wilson and he said it wasn't far away. He must have been joking. I'll go and look...

Austin's a nice town. You'll like it. Great music and food and the Texas Hill country is real pretty. Are they holding it at the Driskill Hotel? Real cool hotel.

Ah, too bad. The Driskill is one the best old-style hotels you'll ever see. All the Texas power brokers--Lyndon Johnson, for one--used to hang out there. Gorgeous place.

Just make sure you book the right Doubletree - there's more than one! If you follow Ally's link above, there's also a convention discount. (Which I didn't know about when I simply googled "Doubletree" "Austin" and was halfway through booking when the room rates startled me into double-checking. I also realised I'd been booking the wrong hotel.)

The RIGHT hotel happens to be conveniently placed next to Pappasito's (one of my favourite Mexican restaurants) and Pappadeaux (one of my favourite Cajun/seafood restaurants) - hooray!

I'll not be going to World HorrorCon in order to be able to afford British Fantasy Society FantasyCon in Brighton... just to guilt the lot of you into making the trip to Brighton... although I'll stay at the Raddison Blu probably (note to self: pack loo tissue).

I've booked...not sure if they charge your account straight away. Info says if you wish to cancel do so 24 hours before arrival to afford cancellation penalties so I'm presuming that if I can't go I'll get a refund.

Ally, in my experience American hotels are really good about cancellations. Even if they've charged you, they should refund the money if you cancel before 24 hours (or whatever the cancellation policy is). I suggest writing to them to make sure if you're in any doubt.

I haven't looked at flights yet but we're tacking on a (gulp!) family visit elsewhere, so we won't be flying into Austin anyway.

By the time you get to Phoenix they'll be printing,
and they'll turn around and scream your name out high,
because they thought your corrections didn't matter,
though time after time you tried to warn them why...
and now they'll die...

I once read a fantastic essay in a Nick Cave fanzine by a music fan who was obsessed with finding out the story behind 'By the Time I Get To Phoenix'. He tried to interview everyone who had recorded the song to find out what they thought it meant, and ended up going to a spirit medium (this being 1997) to see if she could help him talk to Elvis. She said no, she couldn't help him... because... yes, you've guessed it.

As Lady P says we shall be going and with any luck there should be another performance on the cards as well. We're not sure if a mainly US audience would understand the pantomime version of 'Blood on Satan's Claw' so we're probably going to reimagine an American classic instead.

Well, oddly enough, I've always wanted to visit Austin. So WHC is my excuse. The Doubletree is in North Austin, unfortunately. But, I'm not going to be knocking around the hotel at night. I'm going into Austin proper, 6th Street, and taking in some live music.

Who's with me?
