The breaking of these - once unthinkable - stories is becoming increasingly commonplace, Sean. There's hardly a month goes by now when 'Fortean Times' doesn't report another such revelation, decades after the fact. The current issue has an in-depth investigation of the notorious Hollinwell Incident of 1980. Hundreds of children, but also adults, babies and even livestock were all affected, yet the authorities at the time, after a perfunctory "investigation", brushed the incident under the carpet with the words "mass hysteria". There was a similar 'experiment' in Canada by the CIA or FBI (sorry, don't recall which) in the early 60s in New Westminster (right next door to Burnaby, where I live). It was over-seen by a Psychiatrist whose work with LSD as a therapeutically beneficial substance was hailed by several of Hollywood's stars at the time (and these were old-skool ones, possibly including Gregory Peck or Clark Gable... sorry, again, details elude me, but if the names are wrong the sort of star is not: male and ultra-traditional in image). The experiments were on both 'normal civilians' who only knew they were part of a study and not who it was for nor what it involved, as well as 'retarded adults and young people' who obviously had no concept of what was going on. There was also a study in the mid-50s in Quebec with the same sort of purpose: find out what LSD does to people who are already emotionally and developmentally handicapped (becuase they're not people, so who cares?). Shockingly evil, but hardly surprising that the same group of individuals that brought us so many other things (Viet'nam; Korea; Hollywood Communist Blacklist; public shaming of Homosexuals...) would also do this. ...and, no; this locally-conducted secret experiment doesn't explain why I am like this. | ||

What amazes me is that people aren't more up-in-arms about these stories and that the media doesn't make more of them... instead the reaction appears to be a general shrug of indifference. There's no accounting for human nature! Yet the clear inference is that the crimes against humanity these shadowy intelligence agencies got away with in the past they'll have no compunction about committing now... and given the phenomenal technological advances of the last 40 odd years that thought terrifies the hell out of me! Genetically engineered superbugs designed to target ethnic minorities anyone? Nano-bots in our water supply? Covert surveillance of individuals by secretly implanted tracking chips? Let's wait 50 years and see... | ||
