I've been 28 for the last eight years. Or 14 for the last 22, some would say...

Have a good 'un!

That gives me one more year before my "life begins".

Well I had to wait until I was 42 for my life to begin. Mind you, it's been worth the wait

Happy birthday, Gary!

Read Edwin Morgan's poem 'The Second Life' for a truly positive take on turning forty. You've still got that to look forward to.

The poem I mean, not the turning forty. That will suck. But it will be a picnic compared to what follows.

Nah, rowdy, not Fry, not now, only slip-on shoes, a half-ounce of Golden Virgina, a copy of the Radio Times and the fast-dial button to the local surgery for emergency instant ear-wax removal await our lad now.

Darren, I too had a hard time with 30 - no longer being in my twenties was tough to take. I also struggled with 35, because there was no way on earth I could continue to even pretend that I was in my early 30s. By comparison, 40 was a cakewalk for me.

You have approximately 525,600 minutes until you turn 40. Or 8760 hours. And for about one third of that time, you'll be asleep.

Skip - if it's a Freudian slip, I'd keep that one locked in it's darkest recess

Gary - to be Frank takes skill and a certain amount of debonair panache... (Where's bloody Joel when you need him)!

I'll refrain from further disastrous punning attempts...it's not even a real pun.

Happy birthday, young 'un. I'd better not tell you what I turned a few weeks ago.

I remember I felt terrible about the thought of turning 25, then the idea of turning 30 was even worse. By the time it got to the thought of turning 40 it was just horrendous.

But when I started to get close to 50 I realised you really *could* turn the clock back (in your head, at least) and do the things you meant to do all those years ago. I haven't looked back since.

Enjoy it while you can Gary - you only live once. Or maybe twice in your case, or three times, or four ...

It's nice to be the baby of the group... but I can relate to Zed's comment about hitting 30. I remember Rhys telling me the same thing about his 30th vs. his impending 40th.

30 was the big one. You're officially not a youth anymore... once you adjust to your mortality and the ever-accelerating speed at which the years hurtle by as you rocket towards Planet Death, it gets a lot easier, I've found.

Sorry, I've not lightened the tone here, have I...

Hi, Gary!
Happy birthday to you...
and to me: I was born August 31 too, a bunch of years before you were ushered into the world. Indeed I was born in 1946 which I believe to be Ramsey's year of birth too.
I have just pre-ordered your Canted Steps novel.
I am looking forward to a real treat!

Hi Caroline!
Thank you! Yes, it was a good one: I stayed home from work, ordered Fry's forthcoming novel, went out for a rural dinner with my girl-friend the artistic dance teacher (not my teacher, though), had Jung's huge "Red Book" as her present, got slightly intoxicated with local wine so my friend had to drive me back home.
End of birthday song.
