As a Friday night 'virgin' at FCon, I was just wondering how things went. Do people meet up and go for a meal together, do people fend for themselves, what happens?

I'm not looking to gatecrash anything, particularly, but if there's something going on and a space free, well, I'll be in town ;-)

Well, the initiation ceremony starts at 7, so remember to bring your rubber trousers. Then it's to the bar for drinks. And then on Sunday, you leave.

There's usually a quiz on the Friday night, I'm assuming there's one this year. Not everyone goes though, some people prefer drinking at the bar for some strange reason.

Thanks, lads - I was thinking more along the lines of foods, rather than hazing! A quiz sounds good though (he said, suddenly realising he sounds like what his sister would lovingly call a dweeb).

IIRC there was a free bowl of chips on each table at the quiz last year. But if you want a proper meal there's loads of places to eat near the hotel. SOP is to talk at the bar until everyone gets hungry and then go off in search of the nearest eatery.

I hope to be there around tea time - and I'll probably be hungry, as well as not knowing many people by sight (I've only ever "seen" most of you on the internet). So I'll be staring at everyone's chests, trying to read name badges to see who you all are. Look out for me - I'll be the shy-looking one hiding in a corner.

This Area 51 table seems to be the place to go if you don't know anyone personally. This will be Esther and I's first FantasyCon (although we did the WHC in Brighton earlier this year) so we may be lurking there for a bit.

This might be useful, too.

The Britannia Hotel has come to an arrangement with the NCP car park on St James Street to offer cheap parking to attendees of FantasyCon: just £5 per 24 hours, a substantial saving on the usual rates.

Note that it's a one-time ticket, the special rate lasting only as long as the car remains in the carpark.

To take advantage of this offer, ask for the ticket at the reception desk of the Britannia upon your arrival. Note that there are only 70 such tickets available, and they cannot be booked in advance.

The hotel's restaurant does quite nice hot buffet meals at a reasonable price. That tends to be my default food solution over the weekend. There's also lots of fast food within easy reach of the hotel, including a branch of Gregg's the baker's that stays open late on Friday and Saturday night.

Yes, Area 51, a corner of the small bar by the dealers' room, will be open Friday and most of Saturday for lurking or anything else helpful for newcomers/people arriving on their own. There'll probably be a table at breakfast too if I can get up early enough.

If you find yourself at a loose end on Friday night come join the Abaddon team at the Salutation Inn, just across the road, where, from 8pm, there is an evening of Abaddon sponsored heavy metal karaoke. Oh yeah! Love the metal!

Simon, you won't be on Guy's list yet because you sent in a paper form rather than booking online (the online form had space to express an interest in doing readings). If you email Guy (fcon at britishfantasysociety dot org) and let him know you're interested he can add you to the list.

Actually, I enjoy doing the readings - it's fun trying out the stories in a new format. This year, I was planning (still am with luck) to do a story about noodles. I mean, last year, I made Ally cry - if that's not a result, I don't know what is!

I would like all the readers to hand out little invitation cards to all their mates with the times of when and where they are doing readings so we can remember where and when exactly everyone will be so not to miss out.....its a nightmare trying to remember it all (especially when a little intoxicated) then you end up missing them!

Please and thanks

Not a bad idea Sooze...and I could put some on the Screaming Dreams table.

If I had been sorting out the readings I was going to put a flip chart/easel up with all the times on in the bar...so people know. There might be a listing (a small folded card with all on would be good) in the Fantasycon bag though, with the Souvenir Programme....which should be as stunning as last year. Money well spent.

I'm getting very excited about Fantasycon :>).

I have a new powder blue jacket with gold stripes running through it so I'm thinking of premiering that for the Friday reading, then something velvet (black or burgundy - not sure) for the Pan Horror reading. Not sure what to wear to the signings yet.

D'you know, I've often seen women discussing what they're going to wear - generally when sitting in a beauty salon/at the hairdressers - but I've never seen a bunch of horror writing males discussing the best outfits to wear at a "do". Priceless!

Me? I'll be in jeans and baggy shirt (generally check or stripes), as always.
