Okay, here's one for those who anticipate having a slow or boring Friday. Alas, I won't be one of you (sadly), but at least I can start the ball rolling with my own nominees.

What are your ultimate movies in each of the following horror-relatied categories.

Apocalypse - THE BIRDS (1963)

I'm sure I've missed some, but hell, it's 1 in the morning and I'm pissed. At least there may be some talking points here.

Simon, I nearly added a category like that just so I could include CHUD! Good choices - I really wanted to list Jaws and Creature from the Black Lagoon in the oceanic horror category, but there's only room for one. Maybe if we split it into sub-categories (sea, freshwater, real creature/imaginary creature, etc.), I could have included even more of my faves, including that guilty pleasure Frankenfish!

I'll add my vote for CHUD in the Films We Know are Crap But Love Anyway category (it's a toss-up between that and House of the Dead!).

... and here's another couple of categories I've thought of that might be fun:

Polar Horror - The Thing (Carpenter)

Silent Horror - Nosferatu

Also, I may revise some of my own selections, given the choice alternatives that are now on offer here.

Some excellent choices there, Zed and Weber. I agree that After Hours could be classed as a horror film, of sorts (great film).

Here's another category we could add (if it's not too similar to 'slasher' and 'insanity'):

Serial Killer - I expect a lot of folk would choose one of the Lector films, but I'd go with either M or Memories of Murder, I think.

Sean, I was looking for a way to include a Body Snatchers film (either the first or second, or both of them - they are both excellent), so it/they get my vote as well in the Paranoia category.

I notice with some embarrassment that I nominated King King for best Giant Monster film. Wish we had an edit option here...

The Birds is much more terrifying.

There's also the other excellent du Maurier short, "Don't Look Now."...

(Speaking of, tangent: I just recently saw the 1952 period psychological thriller, MY COUSIN RACHEL, also based on a du Maurier work - starring Richard Burton and Olivia de Havilland - what an excellent film that was! Rates up there with other such pyscho-thrillers in the same genre, SUSPICION, SHADOW OF A DOUBT, etc., so if you like those.... [Note to Weber: I saw it at all, because it was recommended to me, by someone who was reminded it of it by my latest])

New category, and for me the scariest of them all:

Doppelganger - 'The Student Of Prague' (1926) by Henrik Galeen, going by reputation, but of those I've actually seen, 'The Man Who Haunted Himself' (1970) by Basil Dearden.

Weird that the most frightening theme in all horror has been so ill-served by cinema - other than replica aliens and 'Journey To The Far Side Of The Sun' (1969) by Robert Parrish, that I can think of...

Then, in literature, we have 'William Wilson' (1839) by Poe, Dostoevsky's 'The Double' (1846) & 'The Other Passenger' (1944) by John Keir Cross, while TV gave us 'The Case Of Mr Pelham' (1955) as one of the most memorable episodes of 'Alfred Hitchcock Presents' & the unforgettable 'The Two Faces Of Evil' (1980) from 'Hammer House Of Horror'.

Given the glut of vampire, werewolf, zombie, mummy & Frankenstein films, and how frightening the first two Body Snatchers films are, why no more doppelgangers? It proper baffles me...

E.T.A Hoffmann wrote one of the first (perhaps the first) doppelganger stories, and don't forget Ramsey's 'The Scar'!

Thanks, Huw.

I see the Hoffmann story was 'The Doppelgδnger' (1821) but that it was inspired by the German fantasy novel 'Siebenkδs' (1797) by Jean Paul - who actually invented the term. Interesting that this horror theme also had its origins in the era of classic gothic literature.

I don't think I've read 'The Scar'. Which collection is it in?

Just checked and I have 'The Scar' in 'The Height Of The Scream' collection, which I haven't got round to reading yet.

Out of interest, are there any new or unavailable elsewhere stories in 'Alone With The Horrors' or is it one I don't need to have?

Got: 'Demons By Daylight', 'The Height Of The Scream', 'Dark Companions', 'Cold Print' (the full edition), 'Scared Stiff' & 'Waking Nightmares'.

I have the collections you do, Stevie, but not with me, so I can't compare tables of contents. My copy of ALONE WITH THE HORRORS contains the following stories:

The Tower of Yuggoth
Cold Print
The Scar
The Interloper
The Guy
The End of a Summer’s Day
The Man in the Underpass
The Companion
Call First
Heading Home
In the Bag
Baby
The Chimney
The Brood
The Gap
The Voice of the Beach
Out of Copyright
Above the World
Macintosh Willy
The Show Goes On
The Ferries
Midnight Hobo
The Depths
Down There
The Fit
Hearing Is Believing
The Hands
Again
Just Waiting
Seeing the World
Old Clothes
Apples
The Other Side
Where the Heart Is
Boiled Alive
Another World
End of the Line

Are you missing any of these?
