Okay, so I'll put anything film related, trailer related or general news I think people may be interested in.

First off, I'd like some advice on which of these two films to buy today. I have enough money for one. So, Shrooms or Cthulhu (2007)?

What about 'Burrowers' a horror western, a sort of serious Tremors?

The only one of those I liked was The Burrowers, and I liked that a lot (as did many others on here).

Oh, hang on, I haven't even seen Cthulhu.

Cthulhu, just watched the trailer before I go out and purchase one of the two. Bloody hell, looks fantastic...stunning photography of them coming out the ocean. Looks incredible.

No, alas not, Caroline. It's much cheaper for me to buy in England. And Amazon don't deliver to Poland. We do have a Polish equivalent, which is very good, but it doesn't usually have even a quarter of what I like.

PS: I bet Zed is ordering Cthulhu online now.

Zed - thanks for encapsulating your thoughts so succinctly.

Seriously, I thought Shrooms might be a waste of time, but the trailer gave it the appearance of having handsome production values. So, it's now a toss up between Cthulhu and The Burrowers.

Don't bother with 'Shrooms', not even patriotic fervour could make me say anything good about it.

Know nothing about this 'Cthulhu' film - has someone finally done the man justice!?!?

And I've heard nothing but good things about 'The Burrowers' and long to see it myself...

Lucio Fulci's 'The Beyond' (arguably his masterpiece), for the first time in too many years!

THE BURROWERS is great. Nice to a see a monster film take a bit of time to establish its characters and their relationships before sending them off into the wilds. The ending is a real kick in the balls, too.

That's the third time I've watched 'The Beyond' and it always leaves me feeling seriously freaked out. The film makes no logical sense whatsover. I mean, compared to this, 'Phenomena' is a model of clarity!

Fulci lit up the early 80s with a trilogy of the most wilfully bizarre and nightmarishly surreal horror films I have ever seen - 'City Of The Living Dead', 'The Beyond' & 'The House By The Cemetery' - but this was by far the weirdest of the bunch. From first scene to last this is nothing more than one long nightmare put on screen - and obeys all the rules of dream logic in a way that is comparable to David Lynch's 'Eraserhead', filtered through one of the darker episodes of the old 'Twilight Zone'. The prominent use of the Book of Eibon could also qualify it as part of the Cthulhu Mythos, taken from one of Lovecraft's worst nightmares... Another one from the golden era of horror cinema that they really don't make em like anymore.

I have 'The Beyond' at the top of my 'to be watched' pile Stevie. Would you believe I have never seen it yet! That first teenage viewing of 'City of the Living Dead' all those years ago still gives me goosebumps.
By the way have you heard of,or seen, a Fulci giallo called, 'Seven notes in Black'?

You're in for a treat, Sean, just don't expect a narrative you can actually follow but rather a stream-of-consciousness series of extreme horror set pieces, filmed as stylishly as only the Italians know how.

I'm going through another of my regular Italian horror phases. Still so many I've yet to see as well, including quite a few of Argento and Bava!

Not familiar with that Fulci title.

Yes, THE BEYOND makes no real sense whatsoever - a nightmare, I do think you're right, that's what it is, Stevie - just one long nightmare. It even has that one thing dreams/nightmares have, where minor characters suddenly expand into major players - namely, Joe the Plumber and his family.

Yes, all the time they were talking about "Joe the Plumber" during the Obama Presidential election here in the States, back in 2008, I was seriously freaking out!

Other pure dream movies - is this another thread, Frank? ERASERHEAD, and other Lynch films - MULHOLLAND DRIVE is 3/4's nightmare, according to my interpretation of it (the last 1/4th is the only part that takes place in "real time," imho); INLAND EMPIRE is surely one long nightmare of some kind. LAST YEAR IN MARIENBAD? Also the more recent, somewhat underrated STAY. Hmm. What else?

Lynch is always at his best when avoiding straight narrative and following his instincts imo: 'Eraserhead', 'Lost Highway', 'Mulholland Drive' & his masterpiece 'Inland Empire' are the greatest examples of dream logic surrealism ever put on film. The fact he can also filter straight narrative through the same warped world view - as with 'The Elephant Man', 'Blue Velvet', 'Wild At Heart' & 'The Straight Story' (ha!) - is what makes him such a genius imo. It's also what made him such a bad choice to film an intricately structured epic like Frank Herbert's 'Dune' - apart from a few standout scenes, his instincts had no room to breathe.

The grandaddy of all dream logic horror films has to be Carl Theodor Dreyer's 'Vampyr'. I've always been struck by how like Lynch the feel of that movie is. Another disorienting nightmare of a horror film is Ingmar Bergman's 'Hour Of The Wolf', an incredible dark gothic fantasy that surely must have been a big influence on Lynch as well.

Stevie - I've also noted the influence Bergman must surely have had on Lynch. The opening of Wild Strawberries is the best example of a filmed nightmare I've ever scene. Bergman does in five minutes what Lynch does in ninety.

Oh yes, that opening sequence is disturbing as hell! 'Wild Strawberries' is one of my fav Bergman films. A real work of art I could never grow tired of watching, it has everything; humour, pathos, profundity and terror.

But Bergman was possibly the greatest film director who has ever lived imo.

I tend to trust Mark Kermode's judgement, and that 'Cashback' film sounds fucking terrible, so I think I'll be giving 'The Broken' a miss...

There's nothing worse than a flashy young director, with his head up his own arse, thinking he can reinvent a genre he clearly has no natural feel for - M. Night Shyamalan springs to mind.

Linking up with Steve's mention of Tom Shankland, the director of The Children, has anybody seen his other horror film W^Z? The middle letter is meant to be a large triangle. It was released in 2008. Stars Stellan Skarsgard and Melissa George. Miss George has now made four top-notch horror films.

Animal Kingdom: This film was recently voted the greatest Australian movie ever made. Hard to believe considering it's practically brand new. But I have it from a friend in Australia that its impact on Australian film-makers and movie fans is equal to that of Pulp Fiction when it came out. I also would watch Guy Pearce in just about everything. The man's a wonder.

New film with Liam Neeson. You can pretty much work out what's going to happen from the trailer. Especially with the last few scenes and a one-liner straight out of an Arnie 80's action fest. Mind you, it might turn out to be better than it looks. Man has accident in Berlin. I read two previews for this adaptation and they said it was the best adaptation yet. They were glowing in their praise and said it was a triumph in every department.

Terence Malik is back with a drama with tinges of sci-fi, Tree Of Life. Starring Brad Pitt and Sean Penn, as father and son respectively

Agreed, mate. Just wish he wouldn't keep making films every decade. For one of the most revered, and respected directors, he's made very few films. Still, that's no reason why he shouldn't be admired as he is.

The Thin Red Line, don't get me started...a frigging masterpiece. The scene where they run into the Japanese camp to find all the Japanese soldiers screaming in fear. My grandfather fought in India (the Forgotten army) and his recollections of the war the film uncannily reflected. Or not, given the amount, and scope of the research.

'The Tree Of Life' is only his fifth film since 1973, but, as the previous four were all stone cold masterpieces, this is very exciting news.

I'm a great believer in the "less is more" rule - it worked for Dreyer, Tati, Bresson & Kubrick!

His last film was a bit dull, I thought - the one with Colin Farrell? I couldn't make it all the way through... Badlands and The Thin Red Line are superb, though.

I've watched 'The New World' twice, Zed, and it's one hell of a grower. Set to become one of those undervalued masterpieces that garners universal acclaim in years to come... it has the power and beauty of 'Barry Lyndon' imo.

I hated the fact that The Thin Red Line kept being compared to Saving Private Ryan, as if it were the lesser film. Nothing against Saving Private Ryan, and I don't buy into William Goldman's rantings about it, but I thought comparing them was like trying to compare Picasso with Alan Moore, pointless, and without merit.

But Badlands will always remain my favourite Malik film. A pitch perfect film. Chilling, beautifully constructed, flawlessly acted, important, melancholic - whenever I think of of it I think of Truman Capote.

Strange bastard that I am.

This new Malik film made me think of The Fountain.

The timing for the release of The Thin Red Line was unfortunate - made Malik look like a bandwagon-jumper when he's anything but. Same thing happened with Kubrick when Full Metal Jacket came out so close to Platoon, Hamburger Hill, etc...

Ryan and Line are utterly contrasting films on the subject of war. Both are excellent, but they take almost opposite approaches and are thematically very different.

And, yes, I agree about Badlands: pitch perfect in every way. An astonishing piece of cinema.

I actually consider the whole of Platoon a better movie than the second half of FMJ. I'll explain such odd comparisons.

If FMJ had maintained the excellence of the first half, then it would, in my opinion, be a much better movie than Platoon. The second half, or perhaps the last quarter, though horrifying, seems to stumble.

But I do think Platoon has kind of been forgotten. I think it's an overlooked masterpiece.

One of my favourite war movies is Tigerland. When Schumacher gets it wrong he's terrible, but when he gets it right he produces some quality stuff. Falling Down being my favourite. Performance of a lifetime for Douglas.

Though I like Douglas in almost anything, even when it's bollocks. The much under-appreciated 'The Star Chamber' is one of my favourites.

The Star Chamber...a gem. Falling Down...a neglected masterpiece. Tigerland is pretty good, yes.

I think Full Metal Jacket is bloody amazing, though. Don't think it stumbles at all. Near-flawless. Platoon does seem to have been forgotten, doesn't it? While not as good as Stone's masterpiece, Salvador, or his 'Nam follow-up Born on the Fourth of July, it's still a brilliant piece of work.

FALLING DOWN's ok, but very much let down by that "oh well, he was off his rocker anyway" ending. I really wanted him to be a balanced individual driven off the rails, rather than someone already part way there.

But, Mick, he was part way there because that's where we join him in the story - i've seen the film many times, and the impression I always get is that the accumulation of pressures in modern life pushed him right over the edge. I certainly didn't feel it was a cop-out ending.

I saw two interesting asian movies recently:

Yesterday I saw the recent South Korean thriller "The Man from Nowhere". A minor sensation on festivals, it seems, and indeed it does demonstrate once again that South Korea produces some of the best modern thrillers.
In this case the story is a bit slow at first, but when it kicks into gear you're in for a treat. It's not a wildly original movie, but it's very good nevertheless. Two impressive scenes: one is only a camera movement: the hero jumps through glass unto the street a floor below and pursues a car. The cameraman follows him with a similar jump. It's probably doe with a crane yet seamless. And then there is also a very, very scary knife-fight.
In true Korean thriller style, this film does not take prisoners.

The other movie was Takeshi Kitano's Outrage. Kitano is back at what he does best: yakuza movies. It's not as good as my fave of his: Sonatine, but it's still very good indeed. Very dry with sudden bursts of violence, yet sometimes implicitely funny. Strongly recommended !

Two more Korean movies I hope to see soon are both revenge movies, a usually simplistic genre I normally don't care for but Korean cinema had already demonstrated with Oldboy and Sympathy for Mr Vengeance that excellent thrillers can be made on the topic.

these are:
- I Saw the Devil (with the main actor of Oldboy as a serial killer):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCFVoPdfL30

- Bedevilled
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3YZQnY6FABI

Both movies will offer an experience that's far from Hollywood and usually get very good reviews.

Ally - all three of those films are great choices. The Men Who Stare at Goats has a great script and great performances. Four Lions is one of the films of the year, and extremely moving. Brilliantly written with absolute knock-out performances from everyone. And The Road is bleak, beautiful and will in time be considered a great adaptation. Check out the director's previous films, 'The Proposition' with Guy Pearce, Jack Huston and Ray Winstone giving one of his best performances. One of my favourite films.

You might not believe this, but Kevin Smith has made a horror film called Red State, and from just the trailer it appears to be quite interesting. Of course everybody here will be able to work out the narrative, plot and possibly an ending due to a lifetime spent watching horror films, but I think it might actually be quite a good film. I have a love hate thing with Smith:http://horror.about.com/gi/o.htm?zi=1/XJ&zTi=1&sdn=horror&cdn=entertainment&tm=3 &f=22&su=p284.9.336.ip_p504.3.336.ip_&tt=2&bt=1&bts=0&zu=http%3A//coopersdell.co m/

Just saw a real gem: "Golden Slumber", a Japanese conspiracy thriller -who doesn't love conspiracies- that in a touching way cares more about the relations between the people involved than about the conspiracy details. It's from the director who made the excellent "Fish Story", and this one is just as interestingly plotted, and has plenty of charm.
Trailer gives an idea about the story and the peculiar atmosphere. The year is very young and yet this will be one of the best ones:

Zed - I liked the atmosphere, but it was too dark and gloomy to make out what was happening a lot of the time! I liked the appearances of the 'little people' though. I was falling asleep when I watched it, but It didn't really make much sense to me, to be honest. Why did they need the woman? When they'd already been set free, why did they need to wait again for someone to set them free all over again? Hmmm...

I felt the same way about Antarctic Journal - I loved the ominous build-up of the first half, especially the discovery of the journal itself. But it really fell apart at the end, unfortunately.

Have you seen Hansel and Gretel? If not, it's definitely worth a watch.

Either I mentioned this before purely as a wish, or I'm hallucinating. The top three actors in the same film together. Giamatti, Hoffman and Gosling.

Hmm - that trailer suggests the film may be a triumph of "boo!" moments over subtlety and atmosphere. It'll be a shame if that is the case.
