Last night I managed 30 complete lengths of my local swimming pool - 750m in total. Considering that this time last year I couldn't actually swim, I think that's pretty damned good. I also managed to do 3 consecutive non stop lengths for the first time - the longest I've managed to go without stopping yet. I'm proud of it anyway. |

I could never see the point in swimming lengths... splashing about, pretending I was a shark selecting my next victim and diving for pennies always did me for aquatic exercise. |

Just trying to get my fitness up. I've got to do a scene in my play next month wearing just a pair of football shorts - and one of the girls has to say that I've got a good body - so I'm trying to make sure that line doesn't get a laugh. |

Hey, I'm proud of you anyway, Weber! I could never swim. Always terrified of water. But I used to spend a lot of time as a teenager at my local swimming pool, basically because I was happy to be used by my friend as an "excuse" to go there to see her boyfriend (who she was banned from seeing by her parents). One day, said friend and her boyfriend told me that anyone could swim, everyone just floated in water anyway. So they threw me in. I didn't float! I froze with fear, and I remember sitting on the bottom of the pool (luckily it was the shallow end - you'll see why in a bit), eyes wide open, seeing all the bubbles of air float up in front of my face, totally unable to move. Fortunately, too, I had long hair at the time which saved me. My friend realised I wasn't going to float as she'd thought, grabbed me by the hair which was still on the surface, and pulled me out. The only other time I've had so much pain in my lungs was when I had pleurisy. I guess I was close to starting to drown. Scary! They tell me that "aqua-robics" would be good for my health problems. I keep being tempted to try it, but then I chicken out. I don't think I could get in a swimming pool again. Besides, I'd look like a beached whale if I put on a swimming costume nowadays! |

That's an awful story, Caroline, and was very cruel of your "friends". It would be a great shame if one incident deprived you for life of the sheer joy of being immersed in water. It's not that you're weightless but that it takes so little effort to make yourself float. I can't imagine how amazing it must be to experience the full weightlessness of space. You owe it to yourself to give it another go, with proper supervision. Nevermind the exercise, think of the fun you're missing out on! |

You mustn't be a witch, Caroline. Webber, well done on the swimming front. Good luck with the play too. |
