Hello to you all.

I’ve been lurking around here for a while and felt it was time to join in with the discussion (it was starting to feel a bit voyeuristic and weird).

Just as a small introduction: my favourite writers (excluding the guv) include J.G. Ballard, Dennis Etchison, Thomas Ligotti, Haruki Murakami and kazuo Ishiguro. I’m a lover of cinema and my favourite film is Taxi Driver. I dabble in writing but I’ve never been published. Most importantly, my favourite novel of Campbell’s is The Grin of the Dark and my favourite short story, for the moment, is “Welcomeland” (although “The Retrospective” is a close second).

I Hope you guys don’t mind me joining in. I have a funny feeling from my months of lurking that I may be the youngest member but don’t let that put you off me .

Cheers,

J.

Welcome, James. I'm an irregular around these parts (and what parts they are!), but let me be the first to say welcome.

Hi James. I don't want to scare you but I eat young men for breakfast! Well, not every day .. today I just had Crunchy Nut Cornflakes.

Anyway, seriously, welcome!

Actually, James, ignore Gary/Fry/Prof/He who knows nowt about films. He's kidding. It's not 25 quid, it's 50 quid, made payable to Yer Right Honourable F Duffy squire, care of lunatics asylum.

Gary's the equivalent of the local drunk. He says a lot of stuff nobody really understands, but we just and nod and say we do. Easier that way.

What's the most effective decapitation in film history?

The Exterminator (1980; James Glickenhaus).

Frank, are you drunk or something?

A Taxi driver can get you from A to B and goodfellas are are cheap and nasty frozen pizza. Of course a taxi driver is better...

Oh, films...?

Didn't realise you were talking films

Much better, IMHO. It's a guy sitting tied to a stake (in 'nam), and a VC soldier decapitates him in slow motion with a sword. It's horrific - even now. His mouth keeps moving as his head falls off.

Actually...email me. I have a spare copy of the DVD.

Hello, James, and welcome.

'Taxi Driver' is very high up my favourite movies list as well, but would you believe, of the authors you list, I've only read J.G. Ballard - the man was a genius!

I think Taxi Driver is a masterpiece in every sense of the word. But for me Goodfellas cements his potential as possibly the greatest American director of them all. It's a work of art, technically beguiling, masterful and constantly developing preceding scenes into this seamless layer of virtuoso visual brilliance.

The casting is nigh upon perfect. The story is intensely hypnotic, and the sense of tension is so palpable at times that it's almost impossible to sit there and just watch. I felt like exploding.

Have you noticed that young James hasn't come back on and acknowledged us? That's either because (a) you've all scared him off with your crazy comments, or (b) I actually did eat him for breakfast this morning.

Please come back James - we're all quite sane really and we definitely welcome new blood (young blood ... mmmm, tasty) to the board.

Apologies, I’ve not been ignoring you all. I’ve been unable to access the web since last night due to being at work. It would take a lot worse than that to scare me off!

I’ll just kill many birds with one huge stone: Thank you all for such a warm welcome!

Frank - I adore Goodfellas but find myself returning to Taxi Driver again and again. I don’t think I’ll ever be free of its haunting power.

Weber - I don’t know about the most ‘effective’ decapitation, but this one certainly scared me the most:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fXXvBg_-pFU&p=A123802B084E8411 .

And Ramsey - yes, the very one!
