Well, that's the hotel booked and paid for. We're in the nicer one, so I can throw black pudding at Ramsey during breakfast.

I take it you're doing the Radisson Blu next door to the "Official" (i.e.: registered) building? I'm tempted to book the same, frankly. Although the tales of "we've got no loo paper" from Lord & Lady P makes me wonder. Still, over the nearly three weeks in the UK this past spring, I experienced five different rooms in four different hotels and came to the conclusion that the the Radisson hotels, even though they're franchises, are more predictably satisfying.

Although if the Black Pudding is mandatory, I might opt for the Posh Totties place in the old town area instead.

Yep, Ian, the Radisson Blu - so far as hotel chains go, I've seen enough of Britannia Hotels to last me a lifetime.
We booked via TravelRepublic.com (cheers for finding that site, Soozy!) and got a pretty good deal, although not quite as cheap as the convention hotel.

Having not stayed at the Albion myself, I can only be guided by the Curtis's wisdom of its lack of quality and if it is anything resembling the Brittania then I would not stay here if it was for free!

So, that said....the Radisson it had to be!...even though it was a bit more to pay.

Soozy - the Albion is a Britannia hotel! We heard some grim tales of the Albion earlier this year, and although the Radisson's not perfect, I reckon it's better, although it is a good nine or ten paces from the convention hotel.

Stayed in a great little B&B called the Strawberry Fields about ten minutes' walk from the hotel. Very well-priced, friendly staff and breakfast served in your room- choice of a bacon roll or smoked salmon and cream cheese bagel. I can certainly recommend them very highly.

I guess most folk here have seen PS Publishing's email about (amongst other things) the books they plan to launch at FCon this year. In case you've not, though:-

• • Inhabitant of the Lake & Other Less Welcome Tenants from Ramsey Campbell
• • Ghosts Know a novel from Ramsey
• • Ian MacLeod’s novel Wake Up And Dream,
• • Red Gloves, a collection from Christopher Fowler
• • The Butterfly Man by Paul Kane
• • Rotten Row, a novella by Chaz Brenchley
• • Osama by Lavie Tidhar
• • Long Shadows, Nightmare Light, a collection by Mark Morris
• • Dark Dreams, Pale Horses, a PS Showcase collection from Rio Youers
• Gutshot an anthology from Conrad Williams

There're five there that I fancy. Hopefully Pete will do a "buy one, get four free" deal...

It's actually The Inhabitant of the Lake and Other Unwelcome Tenants, Mick, restoring the title as it was meant to be.

Sorry Ramsey - that was a straight copy'n'paste from PS's email.
"...Other Unwelcome Tenants" is better than the Arkham's "...Less Welcome Tenants" as the latter suggests the the Inhabitant may not be that bad a chap!

Is that a reprint of the Arkham, or are there additional stories?

Exactly my point, Mick! And sorry - I hadn't realised PS had announced it that way.

Hubert - from the blurb:

"This fiftieth anniversary edition reprints that book in full, including the original introduction. It also includes the first drafts of all the tales that were rewritten before publication and reproduces Derleth’s editorial responses to the stories. This edition is superbly illustrated by Randy Broecker in the great tradition of Weird Tales."

I should explain it's the fiftieth anniversary of writing, not publication.

OMG what have I done? I've just booked for this convention despite not being able to afford it. Please forgive me if I don't buy your book, or the book you're appearing in, or the book you've published, and if I don't join you for a restaurant foray. And I wasn't even drunk when I booked. If I had been, I might have had more sense.

It's truly frightening how fandom has become a club for the wealthy: expensive books, expensive hotels, train journeys (or even flights) that cost a month's food bill. Fandom used to be organised in a way that took account of fans having very little money. Now it all seems to be about conspicuous expenditure, as if we were members of some vile Tory supper-club.

It's distance that's a problem for me, but that's my own fault for moving to such a remote location. We have electricity, tho, so I'm not completely shut off from the modern world. :-)

Joel, Don't fight it mate, Soozy will be on your case!

It's funny that I was temporary BFS chair when we voted to approve the Brighton bid, but in the event I can't make it either because of the distance...

Never mind - I don't regret the decision, because it wasn't as if there were any other options, but I'll look forward to the one in Corby.

Debs and I were looking at our photographs from Whitby only this afternoon. We'll make a point of getting over again, if only for the fish and chips!

I've booked for it - and booked the hotel too - but I'm still not absolutely sure I'll make it to FCon this year. If I do, I'll have to travel light as I won't be able to drive that distance. So that will curtail the book-buying, I'm afraid.

All booked up (in the Con hotel) and looking forward to the Curry run - it’s been years since I last went to Brighton, so I have no idea what’s where.

Not entirely sure about Corby for next year, but since I only live 9 or so miles away, I’m not complaining!

I wish I could recommend a good curry house for you all, but my own favourite is a little too far out of town. Let me know if you need a recce done, though.
