Can anyone tell me the name of a low budget US film, probably a TV movie, that is about the last ay of the world. the exact nature of the apocalypse is never revealed because the film centres firmly on how a group of characters spend heir last day. it ends with the main character sitting on his roof in the evening listening to music.

I have hunted through Google etc but cannot find its title. I need it for a review.

It is a film I tumbled on by accident one Saturday night and never forgot it. The sheer emotional impact of the piece as worth a thousand mindless, soulless blockbusting Doomsdays.
Cheers
Terry

Is it Night on Earth? Directed by Jim Jarmusch? Wynona Ryder's in it.

And have you ever seen Miracle Mile? That's another quiet last-day-on-earth story - it's excellent.

Thanks,I will check both those films out but they don't appear to be the one I'm thinking of. "Last Day on Earth" also looks very intersting, stumbled on it durign my research.

I'm finding myself increasingly bored by films. I startd watching "What Lies Beneath" a few weeks ago and simply lost interst, even though it seemed to be a good film. is there something wrong with me?

Cheers

I know that film, wasn't David Cronenberg in it, in a memorable cameo... it was 'Last Night' (1998), directed by Don McKellar, and in my opinion it was one of the greatest sci-fi films of the 90s. Completely different from, but on a par with, 'Cube' (1997) or 'Gattaca' (1997), or even last year's 'Moon'.

Miracle Mile, blast from the past. Great ending. Hasn't dated too well, but excellent writing and direction. Doesn't it have a Tangerine Dream soundtrack/score?

I've seen and enjoyed 'Miracle Mile' but 'Last Night' is much superior. Frighteningly logical in its execution, one of the most intensely poignant movies you will ever see, and actually very funny as well. My fav character was the single bloke who spends the last night trying to shag as many different consenting partners, in as many different new ways, as possible, while looking ever more shattered as the movie goes on - humour doesn't come any blacker than that.

I don't recognise it from your description, Terry, but in case it's any help there's a list of apocalyptic films on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_apocalyptic_and_post-apocalyptic_fiction

I saw Miracle Mile when it came out and it really struck a chord. The guy who shouts Ophelia's lines "O woe is me, to have seen what I have seen, see what I see" cropped up in my nightmares for weeks afterwards. And when I finally saw the La Brea tar pits all I could think of was that stunning final moment. I've looked for a copy but it doesn't seem to be available on DVD.

As excellent as 'Miracle Mile' is, you really have to see 'Last Night' - it takes the same theme and drives it home with relentlessly underplayed logic.

How would you spend the last night on Earth? This film follows a disparate group of individuals as their fates cross and intertwine, and each of their convincingly human reactions subtly affects the others, in chilling and miserably ironic detail. Honestly, it's one of the very best apocalyptic sci-fi movies ever made imo.

I'm finding myself increasingly bored by films.

Terry, you're just not watching the right films. Instead of bland mainstream fayre like What Lies Beneath (although I think it's rather entertaining in a gloosy kind of way), get stuck into some Asian cinema. The best new film I've seen this year was Chaser - available for less than a fiver on Play.com.

Er - I read that synopsis on Amazon, that Frank linked... I hope the film is better premised than that... it reads like it would be difficult to suspend disbelief for this, but if others are saying it's a good 'un....

Since we're on apocalyptic films, what's the one that is overtly apocalyptic, and follows a host of survivors... and then, very late into the movie, like over halfway I seem to remember, goes from a dramatic handling of the whole thing, to suddenly introducing mutant monsters?... like the film suddenly switched genres from drama to sci-fi... I think I remember this one that way... it was black-and-white I believe, so it's an oldie... I've been wanting to remember for a long time this one myself, to see it again....

The best and most realistic treatment of the apocalyptic sci-fi scenario I have seen was the British TV series 'Survivors' (1975-77). First watched a few years back when it came out on DVD, as I was too young to appreciate it back in the 70s.

But my Top 10 Apocalyptic Sci-Fi Films are:

1. 'Twelve Monkeys' (1995) by Terry Gilliam
2. 'Dawn Of The Dead' (1978) by George A. Romero
3. 'Planet Of The Apes' (1968) by Franklin J. Schaffner
4. 'The World, The Flesh And The Devil' (1959) by Ranald MacDougall
5. 'Last Night' (1998) by Don McKellar
6. 'Pulse' (2001) by Kiyoshi Kurosawa
7. 'Things To Come' (1936) by William Cameron Menzies
8. 'War Of The Worlds' (1953) by Byron Haskin
9. 'Mad Max' (1979) by George Miller
10. 'The Omega Man' (1971) by Boris Sagal

That's off the top of my head...

No Mad Max or a Boy and his Dog? (I think that's what you called it... about a guy and his intelligent talking dog in a post apocalypse future)

Thanks to everyone.

Last night was definitely the film I wanted.

A pint, whenever we next met, for the person who figures out which book I’m reviewing.

And Gary, you're right. I mentioned somewhere else that I loved “The Devil's Backbone” (I also loved “The Orphanage” and “Pan's Labyrinth”. There is also an excellent [Korean I think] film called "Two Sisters" or something similar which I loved. And a French revenge film about a young pianist which I must look up and plug.

It does take a lot to entertain me these days though.
Cheers
Terry

'Children Of Men', 'A Boy And His Dog', 'Testament', 'WALL-E', 'On The Beach', 'Day Of The Dead', '28 Days Later', 'Mad Max II', '28 Weeks Later', 'Doomsday', 'The Day Of The Triffids' (seriously underrated) & 'The Last Man On Earth' were all high up there as well.

While let's not forget the cinematic quality TV productions; 'Threads' & 'The Day After'.
What was that memorable British animated one as well?
