I've seen the original video of this - apparently they have something akin to 'falling goat syndrome' - very rare in the cat world. Whenever they hear a sound they go stiff and fall over.

My dog has just suffered for a week with vestibular syndrone, which involves similar spatial orientation and balance problems. It's not very funny.

The un-tweaked version:-

Apparently the condition is serious - one of the kittens died a short while after the video was created. Only once seen a similar thing on QI when they mentioned falling goat syndrome, as I posted above.

Prof - is your dog a breed or like my two, beautiful little mongrels?

Indeed they are, mate, indeed they are. Many a time in the past, before I met Ewa, when I was feeling pretty low, my two little friends were always on hand to cheer me up.

Had the mother B for ten years now. And her son, Mr Mole for six. Great dogs, even better friends.

As an animal lover (and particularly a cat lover) I definitely don't want to watch this. Do you mean that someone videoed kittens with serious health problems and posted it as being "funny"? Disgusting.

Gary - hope your dog's OK. We have an elderly cat who developed neurological problems nearly two years ago now. He wasn't expected to last, but he's still going strong and still has a good quality of life (he loves terrorising the neighbourhood dogs, in fact!).

I just hate it when I see videos of people deliberately causing distress to animals and calling it funny.

Sorry, still fuming at the thought of that video ..

.. and just remembering a conversation I had with the lady who runs the local cat rescue when we were waiting in the vet's yesterday (my Sylvester has to have regular steroid injections - probably why he chases dogs! ).

She'd brought in an elderly cat who was both deaf and blind. The poor thing had been found sitting in the middle of a road with cars swerving to avoid her! No-one had come forward to say "she's ours". Makes me so mad. How the hell could anyone think "she's getting too old/too expensive/too difficult to look after - let's just throw her out and forget about her". Grrrrrr ...

Think I'm going to have to go and have a lie down, relax and try to stop myself from fuming.

Caroline - the original video isn't meant to be funny, so far as I'm aware, just the later versions.

Yes, to be honest, if one is to be angry - not having seen the original video yet, but assuming it's just the "lasers" one sans lasers - then the anger should/could be directed at whomever owns/video-ed these cats, because the owners are sitting around clapping their hands OS (?) and filming cats falling over dazed. Whoever made the funny video is just an innocent bystander, who added fake lasers and silly music... and I have to admit, I did laugh a little... you can't help it....

It's OK - I've calmed down a bit now, folks. You've found my "achilles heel" guys - do horrible things to cats and I turn into the Incredible Hulk!

Do horrible things to any innocent creature and I'm the Incredible Hulk with a chainsaw, Caroline. I can't stress that enough!

I'd better not tell you about all those hamsters I raped back in the 1980s, then.

It's OK, Zed, the hamsters tell me they enjoyed it so there's no cruelty there.
