Thought this might be of interest to any board members who happen to be in the Preston area:

http://www.newcontinental.net/whats-on/bay-of-blood

I'm quite looking forward to it. I'm a fan of Fulci and Argento but this will be my first experience with Bava's stuff.

And the venue staff were fully aware of the inappropriateness of the 'Trash Cinema' umbrella, it was just the name of the regular event.

James, do you mean you never saw any of Bava's movies? He's my favourite Italian horror/fantasy director, but not only fantasy. For instance, his "Rabid Dogs" is a real treat in terror within a claustrophobic ambience (a car), and he's excellent in historical adventure, mythological yarns, atmospheric spaghetti-westerns even...
Not to be missed! I hope you enjoy his "trash"!

I watched Bay of Blood on the horror channel the other night, and rather enjoyed it.
Stylish, grisly, some very atmospheric photography, and an absurd plot with a wild twist.
Have fun!

Mario Bava's Danger Diabolik is on YouTube here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ws5V0sQ4eWA

It's stylish, daft and clever, and the soundtrack is a Morricone gem.

If you are into Italian things, here's something else Italian:
http://rhysaurus.blogspot.com/2010/11/astral-disruption.html

It has nothing to do with Mario Bava though!

"Mario Bava's Danger Diabolik is on YouTube here..."

But I wouldn't recommend watching it or any other worthwhile film that way! Buy the DVD, folks! It looks considerably better.

I second that... watching a movie on YouTube is as much of a crime as reading a novel off a screen imho.

As someone who hates spending money, because he doesn't have much of it, YouTube is a godsend!

No worries, Rhys, I'm just a curmudgeonly old fusspot about these things.

Forgive me, Rhys, but I'd rather you didn't post links to illegal material. I feel exactly the same about the Bava on YouTube as I do about the unauthorised availability of some of my work online. I believe I've brought this general principle up before, but not since you've been here.

Actually, I haven't merely raised it - it's the final paragraph of the instunctions on the introductory page:

"Do not post any copyrighted material without the prior permission of the copyright holder. Do not post any links to copyrighted material (including films and music) that has been published online without the copyright holder's permission."

I'll type that again without the misspelling, just to make it clear I'm serious.

These are the only Mario Bava movies I’ve seen:

‘Mask Of The Demon’ (1960) - one of my Top 10 horror movies of all time
‘Black Sabbath’ (1963)
‘Planet Of The Vampires’ (1965)
‘Kill, Baby, Kill’ (1966)
‘Bay Of Blood’ (1971)
‘Lisa And The Devil’ (1972)
‘Rabid Dogs’ (1974)

One of these days I’ll splash out on those two brilliant box sets that are available.

If your girlfriend, in a fit of ear-nibbling sofa-passion, asks you what you like, do you crack off a quick list?

I highly recommend the German DVD set of I Vampiri to all Bava fans.

Is it safe to say we should avoid all links to youtube, Ramsey? I tend to do that a lot without even thinking about it, for all sorts of things... when, I probably should be....

Well, some stuff on YouTube isn't copyrighted - me reading "The Outsider", for instance!

I’m ashamed to say I haven’t Giancarlo, ashamed because I’m aware of (and enjoy) his broad influence on much contemporary cinema. It will soon be remedied though.

The event organisers also posted a link to this on their facebook page:

http://www.videowatchdog.com/bava/index.htm

I’m not sure if any of you are passionate enough about the director to justify the hefty price tag but I presume it’s worth it.
