Having re-read 'The Cage' a few days ago (in the most recent Penguin anthology of science fiction, edited by Brian Aldiss) I was so impressed (again) that I decided to find out more about the author, A. Bertram Chandler. Imagine my surprise when I learned that his daughter is Ramsey Campbell's wife!

I'm sure the rest of you knew that already... And it's not such an astonishing thing really, but unexpected connections always make me go, "Ooh!" and give me that strange feeling that maybe the world isn't a real place but a sort of play or scripted performance. I don't know why such connections should give me that feeling, but they do.

Anyway, A. Bertram Chandler is one of those names that kept cropping up when I used to read even more science fiction that I do now. I'm sure I read plenty of his stories in back issues of New Worlds. He seemed to be on the cusp of the old style SF and the 'New Wave'. E. Philip High and E.C. Tubb (who apparently died earlier this year) were another two in that category. Does anyone else remember those two?

Anyway... 'The Cage'. Definitely worth seeking out! A gem of philosophical SF. And most of the other stories in that Penguin anthology are also stunning, especially John Crowley's 'Great Work of Time'.

Rhys - do you read Stanislaw Lem? Do you rate him? I ask, of course, being here in Poland?

Frank: I wrote this last week:

One of the best stories I ever wrote (one of my favourites, I mean) is not only a tribute to Lem but is actually about Lem, and it was published in an anthology called Bound for Evil, a massive volume that contains stories by many writers, including Ramsey Campbell (in fact it contains so many stories by so many great writers that I can't begin to list them):

And as you can see, there's currently a sale on with the publisher...
