Once more, and with diminishing patience, let me draw attention to the last paragraph on the home page of this message board:

Do not post any copyrighted material without the prior permission of the copyright holder. Do not post any links to copyrighted material (including films and music) that has been published online without the copyright holder's permission.

Sorry, I do try and keep up, but it's not always possible when I'm working around the country.

I've now deleted the link you're referring to.

Ramsey - I honestly had no idea. I presumed youtube stuff was free. Honestly honestly.

Hoping patience is restored to level 'green'!

Oh dear, sorry. Have I posted any links I shouldn't have done too? I'm not sure what this covers. Are we not meant to post links to any YouTube stuff, for example? What about posting links to other people's blogs? I guess posting links to news items is OK?

Perhaps someone could clarify for me - am I the only one who's confused about what is/is not covered here?

As a result of reading both threads here this morning my view is that if you can't tell its legality, best not to link it. As I said on the other thread, however, I feel like King Canute in taking this attitude,

I feel surrounded by ginormous human teachers all of a sudden, feel like a kid all over again. Wasn't fun, childhood, really, was it?

Here we are - if, in the slim chance I ever make a film, anyone here can post a link to it if it turns up on youtube.

Youtube can be a copyright minefield.
For example, fans often post music videos, or old tv shows. Yes they are copyright yet several copyright holders such as music companies do not have them removed, but rather reap a bit of benefit from advertisement links that they then add to the clips.
If in doubt, I don't think it's immoral to say that you can find x on youtube, without posting links.

Does that mean I should stop posting links to forthcoming movies?

I think the unwritten rule with trailers is that they're adverts for the film and intended to be exposed to as many people as possible. So technically, if you post a link to a trailer, you're doing some of the advertisers' work for them.

That said, you can usually find things on YouTube (or other sites) marked "official". For instance, musicians often have an "official" YouTube channel where you can see their videos.

So unless someone has better info than I do - my guess is that trailers are safe to link to.

Copyright issues have become an inside-baseball little problem in the world of screenplays, since about a couple of weeks ago an aspiring screenwriter living in New York (i.e., far away from Hollywood), who was sharing scripts online, suddenly had two agents show up at her door one day, informing her she was being sued by Fox for $12 million, I believe, for sharing copies of the script to the upcoming DEADPOOL. Since then, sites where simply individuals were providing downloads for produced and un-produced specs, have voluntarily shut down in a wave of panic.

It's a tricky problem, because Hollywood runs off people sharing copyrighted material - scripts passing from hand to hand all day, technically without consent. But this poor lady was not the high official in on the graft, she was the poor speeder in a strange town who got caught by the corrupted cop, who nevertheless can always point to the letter of the law, as support.

Me?... I'm a bad corrupted soul, and I would argue that, if youtube - who has the ability to, but doesn't take something down - and even makes linking to its site quite easy (they know people want to see these popular copyright-protected clips, not home movies from someone in Oshkosh, Wisconsin) to generate ad-revenue-enhancing traffic... well then... it's not my problem....

But then, the world is falling apart from such corruption. Ramsey runs this site, and if you do wish to preserve the value of copyright, one must be much more stringent than one might like to be, in a wild-west world that values it very little anymore....

Others are looting the store, and sometimes the store's owner is standing outside, salivating and tallying his losses for the insurance companies, helping the looters find the most expensive items to steal... but society will completely collapse if there's not at least one soul out there, to resist the temptation, and to call the very act of looting, wrong...

I think that's why I find the whole thing so confusing. I mean, YouTube actually *encourage* the user to share links with an easy way of copying and posting links elsewhere. It's all a bit too much of a minefield for me to get my head round ...

Don't know where else to put this, and didn't want to start a whole new thread over it.

I like (I say, sarcastically) the way Nikki reduces Ellison to a "copyright curmudgeon."
