I had an unexpected night off on Saturday so I settled down to a triple bill of exploitation films.

Starting with The Exterminator. Im still not sure about this one. The sound quality for the dialogue was atrocious on this; there were places where it was virtually impossible to hear what was going on. It started with a horribly unreal looking battle sequence which did contain a pretty gruesome slo-mo decapitation. It then moved to the big city where our hero ex-soldiers prove to be spectacularly bad at hand to hand combat with a bunch of street thugs. This leads to one being crippled and his best friend becomes the exterminator. He proves that even though he cant fight hand to hand, a fuck off big machine gun is pretty good at evening the odds when the best your opponent has is a flick knife.

I followed this with Last House on the Left (original) this was a real mixed bag. The music was horribly inappropriate for the most part (even if it was written and sung by one of the stars) and the comic relief cops were just irritating. Why in the name of god did they not call for back up from the city when they realised the killers were in town? Instead the headed off in a car with no petrol in it to tackle 4 heavily armed killers by themselves This lack of thought for storyline spoilt most of the rest of the film as well although I hadnt realised how much the Home Alone franchise owed to this film see the traps the father character starts leaving round the house...

Last on the list was The Great American Snuff Movie. This really did cross the line from entertainment to pure unforgivable exploitation. I suppose the fact that the review on the front was from SloppyRooster.com and the production company in the opening credits was Sloppy Rooster should have been some kind of warning. This was competently made which in some ways made it worse. It is the story of a pair of real life killers (the crimes were less than 5 years old when this film was made just to add a bit more poor taste to proceedings) and their attempt to make the Great American Snuff Movie of the title. Its a dramatised version of the journal that one of the killers kept of the six days they kept two girls in captivity (with flashbacks to a couple of other killings). For the most part this wasnt as brutal or as graphic as the similar themed Wolf Creek but where this really overstepped the mark was with the closing few minutes. They close the film with the actual footage that the narrator shot the footage that was screened for the jurors at the murder trial. They then start the end credits with a caption stating that names etc have been changed to protect the identities of the victims considering weve just seen the actual footage this seems slightly hypocritical it also dedicates the film to the victims (slightly more hypocritical) and says that at least 3 of the killers other films he shot are available online (I wonder if you could link to them through Sloppyrooster?). By this time my hypocrisy triggered anger levels are almost at bursting point and if the end credits hadnt rolled I would have thrown something heavy through the TV.

No matter how strong your stomach is, do not watch this film.

Weber, The Geat American Snuff Film contains faux footage at the end - it's all a Blair Witch style fake.

That snuff movie thing sounds rubbish but I've always wanted to see 'The Exterminator'. One of those video nasty classics I missed back in the day.

'The Last House On The Left' still works for me as a shocking thriller, there's something convincing about it that gives the film an edge over other exploitation flicks of the era imo.
