It'll probably be Wednesday, Craig, as Monday and Tuesday are both Bank Holidays in lieu of Christmas and Boxing Day (Saturday and Sunday) over here. Or, if the place Weber works at is like the universities, they're closed until after the New Year in any event. Not that I'm sticking up for Weber or anything like that - just letting you know like ... |

I'm just giving Webs a hard time, Caroline. Though I have a question: is every mass day off in England called a "Bank Holiday"? Uh-oh... differences-between-American-and-English-idioms-alert... most boring subject on planet Earth.... |

>>Though I have a question: is every mass day off in England called a "Bank Holiday"?<< Yes, I guess they are. By "mass days off" I guess you mean religious holidays like Christmas and Easter, but it includes New Year's Day, May Day, Spring Bank Holiday and other such general days off. Next year, for example, we get an extra Bank Holiday for the marriage of Prince William. I guess it's a reflection of the UK being quite business-centred? Traditionally, it dates back to when banks used to give their staff a day off for special holidays - if the banks were closed, then everything else was closed down too! Come to think of it, I guess it's much the same nowadays! |

We definitely don't have May Day off - is that a cultural thing, or is it to honor a specific historical event? We have Labor Day off, and Memorial Day, which have become here our boundary markers for the concept of "summer." Washington's Birthday and Lincoln's Birthday used to be, till only a handful of years ago, specific days in February that were holidays; now, it's contracted to one day, Presidents Day. Martin Luther King Day is now a holiday, but Columbus Day has become non-PC, so that's out. Then there's the 4th of July, of course... in which we celebrate... um... how do I put this delicately?... we celebrate our sound trouncing of you rotten limey sons-a-bastards. |
