Thought folks here might appreciate this - hubby and me were impressed when we saw this in the Ilkley Gazette today: http://www.thetelegraphandargus.co.uk/archive/2011/01/20/Ilkley+%26+Wharfedale+N ews+%28ilkwharfe_news%29/8802557.Can_you_solve_the_mystery_of_the_beast_of_Ilkle y_Moor_/ It's a mysterious "living branch" sculpture which has appeared on the moor - no-one knows who put it there! If I can remind myself of how to post pictures here, I'll post a better pic of it for you. It's really impressive! |

Hmmm, a bit small - but you get the gist of it. I love it! |

I saw some similar wiry creations in Warwick. Birds of prey stalking the water feature outside the County Council buildings. (Not a metaphor, no sir.) |

Wonder how long it'll be before some chavvy scrag from Keighley nicks it and has it up on eBay? |

Very impressive. Thanks for sharing it with us. One wonders about the newspaper's report regarding "unsus-pecting walkers", however. Expen the Scusil if not the Unsus. |

Yes, I noticed that "unsus-pecting walkers" typo too, Des! I hope to be one of those unsus-pecting walkers some time next week, so that I can go and have a proper look at it. I was looking it up on a map, and it's a bit off the beaten track, but I'll try to get there next week (taking my camera with me) and hope to see it in the flesh, so to speak. At the moment, I've no idea how big it is, Mick. I suspect it probably isn't as big as it looks from the photo in the paper. Pity, as it needs to be really big IMO. I hope it doesn't get nicked/vandalised, but I share Gary's concerns that it probably will - hence the reason for going to see it sooner rather than later. Wouldn't it be great for someone to commission a huge living sculpture like that as a permanent piece on the moors - something akin to the Angel of the North for Yorkshire. Beautiful! The only time I've seen one of these living sculputures in the flesh is in a small, and rather beautiful, village called Wycoller, just over the Yorks/Lancs border. In that case, it's a horse and rider they've constructed out of willow, I think. It looked great for a few years, but it's gone a little scraggy-looking now. Anyway, if I manage to get out to see this wonderful moorland hound next week, and take some pictures, I'll report back to you on its size and post some more pics. |
