I watched this last night on the old projector and was absolutely flabbergasted. What a fantastic, bleak-yet-playful film. It struck me as a companion piece to Death in Venice, almost a mirror. The protagonist was even dressed as a sailor boy in his youth, when he was abused by that chauffer. But never mind all this, the film is absolutely beautiful, exciting, frightening, a near perfect gem. And is it me, or was it almost a view of James Bond off duty? |

Fantastic movie, Tony. Bertolucci & Storaro at the peak of their powers. I still consider '1900' to be their masterpiece though... |

It was, Stevie. It made The Godfather suddenly look like the work of an amatuer (which in some ways it was - even Coppola says so), and I can see the influence it had on cinema since everywhere. Sadly not so much these days. I saw a bit of Bertolucci's latest, The Dreamers, and really liked the look of it - is it any good? |

Nah, it's good. Just seeing this film made me really see how much it borrowed. |

I haven't been particularly impressed by any of Bertolucci's work since 'The Last Emperor', Tony. His films are always gorgeous to look at but have tended to lack substance since his classic period in the 70s... like he's been content to tread water ever since, while resting on his laurels (if such a thing were possible). |
