This is an essay about the strenuous--but I think successful--move my wife and I made to our new place in Oakland, Ca, USA (you know, that former colony, used to be in the news all the time?):

My Blogger stats tell that most of my readers in the last week have wandered in from this page. Thank you all very much for your attention!

You're welcome!
I like your voice in these blogs, Thomas. It bodes well for your book.

House moves are such strange things. I can't write during them and yet they're a time rich with material. We moved two years ago into a house that was my wife's father's. We've known it for years. I have yet to settle in as a result and don't think I'll ever feel right in it.
It's in my mental to-do list to write a ghost story about a house move (Hold on, I AM!).

I figured out this week that about twenty years ago I was this 29 year old leaving college and saying bye to my friends, and in about another twenty I'll be about 70 years old. Does everyone else get really scared by such realisations?

Yep. I think it's an age thing, Tony. Funny thing, though, I still feel about 18 inside - even though I look about 80 on the outside!

Thomas - I'll take a look at your blog later ...

Yes, I feel about 18. A good tip I received recently was not to look in the mirror very much.
We are kids. We take baby steps our whole life. The landscape is tiliting for us. We look around at our kids and are scared shitless for them, about them, of them. I still remember my dad telling me how fast life went by, how silly that sounded. Now I could go back and strangle him for having told me (he died aged 61 - 14 years older than me now!).

If I don't look in the mirror often enough, my remaining horseshoe of hair sticks out all over so I look like Alexander Granach as Knock in Murnau's "Nosferatu." Then I start rolling my eyes as my tongue swings and dangles from my--well, you get what I mean . . . .

It's pretty maddening, isn't it? What I find devilishly hard to come to terms with is the fact that the older one gets, the quicker the years go by. Second, the realization that unless one dies in an accident one is likely to succumb to various debilitating ailments in a dreary hospital. So far so good - apart from my deteriorating eyesight (nothing abnormal there) I'm still pretty healthy - but I know sooner or later I'm going to start suffering from this or that atrocious disease . . .
