Great blog post, Thomas!

And I'm with you, in not watching. And in sentiment on everything else....

The Oscar broadcast is one of the highlights of the TV year for me: I love to revel in Hollywood going completely OTT for the night. I faithfully stayed up into the wee small hours to watch it while I lived in England, but it's much more pleasant now that I'm back in the same time zone (if not the same world) as La La Land; it can drag on as long as it likes, it'll still be over while the night is young here. Come 5.00 Pacific I'm unplugging the phone and settling in with nibblies and a glass of wine. Roll out the red carpet!

Nice rant, Thomas! I never watch the awards, much as I love film.
In fact, maybe that's why.

For me the two worlds co-exist peacefully, Mick; I love films, and also love the Oscars, which occasionally manage to reward the right films and performances. Having said that, HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY over CITIZEN KANE? Really?? Sigh. . . .

And HOW GREEN WAS MY VALLEY was shot in black-and-white, no less!

So how green was it then? I'm going to go out on a limb and say NOT ONE GODDAMNED BIT!!!

And DRIVING MISS DAISY over... well, anything. And I was baffled by THE HURT LOCKER being so highly regarded.

"Nothing fun has happened at the Oscars since the days of Sacheen Littlefeather, Mr. Niven, or Clint desperately
covering for a traffic-jammed Charlton Heston."

Not true! I have the 1987 Oscars on tape (just digitised it for the ages). Bette Midler gives a really irreverent and mucky introduction to her favourite category - scoring; Jeff Bridges is asked if he had sympathy for those who didn't win and replies "No."; Betty Davis does a disastrous turn presenting an award and Robert Wise helps her out; Speilberg wins the Irving Thalberg award and gives an impassioned speech calling for good writing and a renewal of our passion for the word; Sigourney Weaver gains probably the first acting nomination for a science fiction film (correct me if I'm wrong...). Platoon, Salvador, Aliens, Hannah and Her Sisters, The Color of Money, Mona Lisa all get nods.

But maybe since then the industry has become an industry..?

Nice to see Colin Firth honoured after his shamefully overlooked work with Richard 'bossman' Curtis.

I used to enjoy the Oscars a lot more than I do now, but I did watch it today. Nice to see Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross win for their score for The Social Network.

Haven't seen 'The King's Speech' and the look and sound of it really doesn't appeal at all.

Thanks, everyone!

And, Proto, sorry, but nothing beats David Niven and the streaker. *That* will not pass our way again.
