I avoided this first time because it seemed so lurid. Now i realise it's sort of tasteful lurid, has a polished sheen. I've never seen it in full before but found myself impressed by much of it, largely the scenes where no-one speaks - there are some lovely, eerie little touches and a ghostly atmosphere that actually shames Poltergeist in some places. I loved the idea of the house being replicated in that studio at the end, the scene where the family are on the beach in daylight in their pyjamas having left their house in the night. It could have really been played up, more, tried for some of the attention-grabbing of a Carpenter or whoever. In fact, despite touches of hokey dialogue, I think I preferred this to some of Carpenter's work. Anyone else remember it? It seems largely forgotten by other horror folk. Oh, and Barbara Hershey - she was just stunning, wasn't she? The things that leave us... |

I'm a big fan of The Entity, Tony. It terrified me when I was thirteen, and I still find it pretty effective. Hershey was gorgeous; one of the most fanciable actresses ever. She looks plastic now, but underneath the ravages of surgery you can still see glimpses of her natural beauty. |

It's a regular on paytv, down here. Recorded it a couple of weeks ago and we plan on watching it this weekend. Saw it about 15 years ago, and remember liking it a lot. |

I've always liked it too. I saw it as a teenager and it certainly kept me awake! The idea of being assaulted by an unseen force was terrifying enough, but the added horror of no one believing her really sent me over the edge. I couldn't imagine anything worse than being told it was all in your head and that you'd somehow managed to inflict all those bruises and bites on yourself. After that, no matter how real the attacks were, you'd have to doubt your sanity. I'd love to see a Hideo Nakata update! |

Looks dead in the (Dark?) water, Kate. Was mooted about five years ago. I've posted a link to an interview with the son of the real woman it was meant to have happened to up there - it's creepy, convincing reading. |

As Tony will verify I consider 'The Entity' one of the most genuinely terrifying and best acted horror films ever made and I would rank it 17th in my Overall Horror Film List. |

It easily swept the board in Stevie's Horror Oscars that year (1982). Another one of the serious adult horror masterpieces made by a big studio and non-genre director (Sidney J. Furie) that became the norm from the late 60s to early 80s - the golden era of horror cinema. |

The Entity has never impressed me, but then 'unexplained phenomena based on true events' movies never do. A quick look on Amazon shows I'm very much in the minority so what do I know. Like Zed I first watched it when I was about 15 but unlike him it did nothing for me at all (sorry Zed). A recent rewatch with Lady P didn't change my opinion that much but that's probably because I'm a cynical exploitation film producer at heart. If it had been my project I would have got Marilyn Chambers to star in it and had it directed by Adrian Lyne |

It's John Llewellyn Winner's version of The Entity, retitled Demon Sex Fiend and starring Ava Gardner, Burgess Meredith, Charles Bronson, Marlon Brando and lots of pretty girls who take their clothes off ("Oh yeeeah, that's niiiice!"). Also featuring Richard Ayoade as the voice of the demon. |

In that case I would do my best to ensure that it provided enough *entertainment* for you to make it worth a re-watch. I already want to start writing this now |

I always found the "truthfulness" of the story unconvincing but as a seriously scary horror entertainment for adults the film works perfectly. The big finale is one of the most disturbingly Lovecraftian moments in cinema imo. |

I saw THE ENTITY on its cinema release and was very unimpressed with it - so much so that I've never bothered watching it again. I may try when it's next on TV as it looks as if I'm in a minority and that perhaps it needs a second viewing. |

How could it not be true? It's called 'The Entity' – if it didn't exist it would not be an entity, so logically it must exist. |

As a kid this was one of those films that had something of an air of the forbidden about them, mainly because of the nuddy video box art. When I eventually got around to it, I was surprised to find how straight and non-exploitative. Effective too, with some nice scares. I haven't seen it in a while, but thought I remember thinking it was pretty good. |
