One of the scariest things (for me) in that news clip is the comment about the Facebook hate campaign against the bully, and the fact that even an elderly couple have been mistakenly targetted. It just goes to show that violence (and bullying, which is violence in my book whether physical or verbal) breeds violence. |

The only way to deal with a bully is to hit him back hard - then he won't annoy you again. That's a valuable life lesson all children learn in the school playground. It is a sad fact of human nature (and how to survive it) that sometimes a violent response is the only one that works. On that point I stand resolutely unreconstructed. |

In that case, I'd better not argue with you, Stevie - you might hit me! Doesn't it bother you, though (not just Stevie, but anyone reading this) - this kind of vigilante (spelling?) mentality humans seem to have? I hate seeing it on the news, when for example someone accused of a nasty crime is taken to court and the mob is there seemingly baying for blood. It's like watching some kind of throwback to our most basic instincts to hunt down and kill things. |

Mob vigilantism is humankind at its most ugly and something I am appalled by, Caroline. I am also horrified at any instigation of violence against a weaker opponent but self defence is self defence. While any man who would dare hit a woman isn't worthy of his sex imo. |

The footage that made me despair was that of the van taking the children who killed Jamie Bulger from court. A mob of adults attacked the van, wanting, it appeared, to physically attack the child inside. Sigh. |

Proto - a good friend of mine from university, her dad was in charge of the Bulger case, and he said that poor kid had to be relocated to another city. The locals tried to burn their house down. Can't even begin to imagine what they must have had to go through. |

Poor kid isn't the way I would descibe either of the lads that killed James Bulger... |

I was talking about the boy originally thought to have something to do with it, and then released. |

It's like watching some kind of throwback to our most basic instincts to hunt down and kill things. And in olden times the mob mostly got what it bayed for. Executions were a public spectacle and if preceded by a sly bit of torturing, so much the better. Google for the execution of Damiens, e.g. |
