OK, no prizes, just for fun ... how many professional actors can you name who've starred as The Doctor in any medium? Of course, there are the easy ones like Messrs Hartnell to Smith inclusive on TV, and Peter Cushing on film, but how many more can you think of? Oh, and tell me what medium it was and what story they appeared in too!

I'm not sure I know all of these myself - I've got some in my head so far, but I reckon some of you will be able to add a few more to my list. I'll give you a few days and then let you know who I was thinking of.

Obviously Rowan Atkinson, Richard E. Grant, Jim Broadbent, Hugh Grant and Joanna Lumley in The Curse of Fatal Death.

And the Unbound Doctors: Geoffrey Bayldon, Derek Jacobi, David Warner, Araballa Weir, David Collings and (arguably) Michael Jayston.

Oops - Arabella, I meant. Haven't heard that one, but I thought the Geoffrey Bayldon one, where he played a first Doctor who never left Gallifrey, was quite brilliant.

Nice going, Stephen. I'd got The Curse of the Fatal Death ones, but didn't think of the "Unbound" ones.

Still more to come though ...

There are quite a few more here, under "Other actors who played the Doctor": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_actors_who_have_played_the_Doctor

I'll link to it rather than pretend I knew them all! I certainly didn't know about Jon Culshaw playing the fourth Doctor in the audio The Kingmaker - will have to search that out.

Aww, that's cheating, Stephen - using Wikipedia!

No, I didn't know about Jon Culshaw either, but he definitely does a fantastic Tom Baker as the Fourth Doctor impression.

Now I'll have to check out your Wikipedia link and see if there are any left for anyone else to guess at ...

Wow, I'd never have got all those! I have spotted one missing one though - Toby Jones who played the "bad" Doctor in a recent story the name of which completely escapes me at the moment. Anyone know the one I'm talking about?

I know you got Richard E Grant in Curse of the Fatal Death, Stephen, but would you have got him in the animated Scream of the Shalka too?

Also, I wondered if anyone would get the two stage Doctors - David Banks (wrong name given in that Wikipedia article) and Trevor Martin. Didn't know Nick Briggs had played him on stage though.

I'm not very good on the audio doctors - wouldn't have got many there.

Hey, has anyone ever played the Doc on radio?

Sorry, I was just googling Trevor Martin to make sure I had the name right..!

One interesting wrinkle is that in Dimensions in Time the dialogue seems to imply that Jon Pertwee, Peter Davison and Colin Baker are all playing the seventh Doctor.

Oh, and I didn't know Mark Gatiss had played the Doc on TV either - did I miss that one or something?

btw Stephen, have you and I got nothing better to do on a Sunday evening?

Oh yes, I really enjoyed Scream of the Shalka. There's a bit in one of the books that addresses the way that there were three possible ninth Doctors.

I think the Toby Jones one was called "The One with Amy's Big Belly Button".

It doesn't quite count for your purposes, but in some of the BBC audiobooks William Russell reads a lot of first Doctor dialogue in character, and sounds wonderful. Similarly Frazer Hines has "played" the second Doctor in quite a few audio books and plays - his Patrick Troughton is really quite uncanny.

I have lots to do, Caroline - I'm supposed to have a new TQF out this evening! Clearly I'm avoiding getting on with it!

Mark Gatiss played the Doctor in a spoof on an anniversary night on BBC2, the same one that had the sketch where two fans kidnapped Peter Davison.

Who played the Valyard in that Colin Baker series of Doc Who? Wasn't he supposed to be an evil Doctor from the future?

Do you mean Michael Jayston, Weber? If so, I think Stephen got him already.

Well, we haven't actually said Richard Hurndall. I WAS going to say it, but decided against it when Stephen linked to the answers on Wikepedia!

But you'll just have to take my word for it that he was one of the ones I was going to say!

Spoilers below in black ink:

it wasn't really the Doctor.

But he did play the Doctor in some of the Audio Visuals tapes, fan-made audios.
