And what's it like? I would like to see all the famous bits but would settle for somewhere atmospheric, like a little island. We might be going next week. And is mount Olympus far away from anything? I want to see the mountains the gods lived in, if possible. |

We love Crete, which has quite a lot of antiquities. We've only been once to the mainland and prefer the islands, but Mount Olympus is inland. Then again, if you're on an island near the coast you should be able to get a ferry and see at least Athens. |

Ah yes - in the interim I found Crete was meant to be quite spectacular. All those gorges! 'The Gorge of Death' - how to avoid a place like that? |

If you want somewhere off the beaten track try Epirus, which is rugged and spectacular for scenery. Less historical stuff there, though! Cheaper than the rest of Greece too. You can fly to Corfu and get a ferry from there (to the mainland). Few tourists do it. Just my suggestion. All of Greece has its own advantages... |

Load some Vangelis into that iPhone or mp3 player! If you're not familiar with his work, try Voices, Opera Sauvage, Spiral or the really great Odes which he did with Irene Papas. |

Crete is beautiful. The Palace at Knossos. Some great drives, too. And yes, get some Vangelis played! 1492 or Heaven and Hell are my tips. |

Watch the sun go down in the temple of Poseidon atop Cape Sounion (about 70 km from Athens) while listening to Vangelis' "Balad". The essence of the Greek soul revealed. |

Wherever you plan to go, Tony, it's worth checking how active the place will be - many resorts virtually shut down out of season, and that includes the tavernas. |

Ramsey - did you go with a package thing or arrange it all yourself? We've only been abroad once and feel a bit daunted...and we sort of want something quiet. Arg! |

I've never been to a Greek island I didn't like - Athens was great, too. |

Tony, Poros is a quiet little island - at least it was when I was there, about 15 years ago. |

We went to Syvota a couple of years ago. It's on the mainland opposite Corfu. Getting touristy, but still picturesque and fairly quiet. I'd go again. As a bonus, it's a short trip to the river Acheron, which is stunning, and you can visit the Necromanteion: the oracle of the dead. |
