http://www.wnep.com/wnep-sny-parents-buranich-english-teacher-writes-racy-novels -20110426,0,4057307.story Obviously none of the parents have ever read a racy novel or had sex before... I'm having trouble getting my head round the point this is making. It seems so f***ing ludicrous |

The parents are clearly a bunch of brain-dead bigoted fuckwits. But they'll probably succeed in getting the poor woman hounded out of her job. Cnuts. Apparently there's a Facebook page in support of her, which may be of interest to US board members. http://www.facebook.com/SupportJudyMays |

Agreed. But it's surprising how many people cannot distinguish between an author's life and the fiction they write – just as they cannot distinguish between an actor's life and the roles they play. An interviewer once confessed himself surprised that Steve Buscemi was such a quiet-spoken individual. Buscemi replied: "I'm an actor, hello?" With considerably more awareness of these issues, Angela Carter was amused to meet the author of a 'dangerous' erotic literary novel and find him a 'vole-like' person, i.e. shy and innocuous. But then, Carter was more like her books than many writers of erotic literature. Is there a place where stupidity about teachers and stupidity about writers meet? Yes, and it's called mid-America. |

And for those who say I'm maligning and stereotyping mid-America and its level of awareness and intelligence, I have two words: birth certificate. |

It's no better over here. Though not strictly related to writers, a friend of mine from France, whom I met over here in Poland, told me he had done a year at a normal secondary school in England, and was horrified when all the boys in his class went 'on strike' in protest over his nationality. It was shortly after the 'coalition' invaded Iraq, and Germany and France had refused to do so. He said what was even more frightening was that when the parents of the boys were called to the school to have a meeting with the headmaster, the parents supported their children one hundred percent. Ah, makes one proud to be English, doesn't it. I say this kind of primitive falsity towards so called patriotic well-being, or as in the case Weber highlights, righteous right-wing indignation at rendering this world sterile and without imagination, is universal. |

A similar thing did happen here, with Sam Stone (then known as Samantha Goldstone). At the time Ramsey said: "A schoolmaster once wrote a novel in which a schoolboy reverts to savagery and kills another schoolboy, but as far as I'm aware he wasn't investigated for this by his school. I wonder if Mr Coates, Mr Britcliffe, Mr Ballard and Ms Ham will have heard of him and his book? His name was William Golding." |

The state of things today, I think it might be a lost cause to invoke the name of somebody such as Golding, as one would no doubt be met with blank stares, and indifference. |

Pathetic. A deliberately salacious article over a completely innocent situation. And shame on the bell-ends who've grabbed their pitchforks and burning torches. Particularly the stupid parent who was worried what her son might be thinking about while the novelist was teaching him. As though teenage boys don't think about sex all the time anyway. At least it appears that a lot of people, including old students, are backing the teacher up and the self-righteous indignants are getting a bit of stick. |

By the same token, I guess we should lock up all crime fiction writers and throw away the key. Then, there'd be no crime to worry about. After all, it must be the crime writers who are committing all the crimes. And as for you horror writers, well I guess you're all evil, warped and twisted individuals who want to do harm to everyone, aren't you? (do we have an irony emoticon? - in case anyone thinks I'm serious) |

"well I guess you're all evil, warped and twisted individuals..." This is very close to what a woman (at least, she implied she was a woman) said to me in an email shortly after From the Borderlands was released in paperback. She went on to say that I should "be put to death" before I caused any more "damage." |

I wasn't me who sent that email, Darren - honest! I like the irony of her saying you should be "put to death" - I mean, that's a really nice, kind thing to say to someone, isn't it? I have to say, I haven't met an unpleasant horror writer yet. OK I know there are a few odd characters around the internet, and we do seem to get the occasional rather heated "flame war", but of the folks I've met in the flesh at cons, etc, and spoken to via the internet, I reckon you're all absolutely lovely! |

"I like the irony of her saying you should be "put to death" - I mean, that's a really nice, kind thing to say to someone, isn't it?" That and a couple other things in her message indicated to me that she was an angry and not altogether sane person. I was tempted to ask her why she was reading such material in the first place, what with it being so "sinful", but I was advised not to respond to such folk. |

Darren - I'd like to think she was 'not altogether sane' by whatever standards I have to judge by, but in my experience these people clog up inches of local newspaper columns on the letters page as they lay waste, or so they'd like to presume, to us deviants stalking the landscape of their delusions. There are much more of them out there, apparently, so called citizens of their communities than we care to admit. It'd be quite worrying if I weren't packing a pencil and an eraser for just such occasions, God forbid they may arise. |

Another bit that had me doubting her sanity, Frank, was that she felt that contacting me (and others, I'm guessing) over the matter was because she'd been "assigned" to it. By whom? By God, of course. And then she went on to add how sad she was that I didn't "aknowledge and understand" my last name. After a moment of silence, I laughed myself silly. Caroline: From what I've read of your posts on this board, you're just a bit too lucid and literate to be of her ilk. Hubert: Should she arrive at my door with murder on her mind, then I will shoot her. |

BTW Darren, Hubert, everyone else - you do realise I was only joking with that comment about all horror writers being warped, twisted, etc, don't you? It was just me trying to show how daft the idea is that if you write horror/crime/sexy stuff/etc then you're obviously tainted with the same thing in real life. Just wanted to make that clear before anyone misunderstands my comment. Getting a bit paranoid now ... |
