There are undesirables visiting... Look what I just found when I was checking the times for China Mieville tonight.

A Super SF/Fantasy Weekender - the Clash of the Titans!

WATERSTONE'S MANCHESTER DEANSG
Saturday, 21 May 2011, 12:00PM - 5:00PM
Can Manchester contain this amount of SF and Fantasy talent?? By special arrangement, we’re bringing together Solaris/Abaddon and Angry Robot, the UK’s top indie SF publishers, for one very extraordinary day of fantastic fiction. Will the world ever be the same? Authors include Andy Remic, Gary McMahon, Ian Whates, Mike Wild and Pat Kelleher.

More details from the store:

Kick-off will be about 2pm, although the Who forum may run on a bit depending on how many people are there. I'm thinking very much of a panel discussion to follow on from the Who people - I imagine someone like Dave Howe will stick around so it'll be quite informal.

If anyone is going, there will be available to buy a limited number of advance copies of THE CONCRETE GROVE (published by Solaris, and not officially out until early July). Obviously, I'll be signing these.

Aww, wish I could go but, alas, I'm nursing a suspected spontaneously fractured spine at the moment so I'm struggling to walk to the village Co-op, never mind a train trip to Manchester. Honest, I'm not kidding ... it's b****y painful ...

Good luck with it Zed - and sorry I didn't make it to Leeds either when you did one there recently too.

Caroline, that sounds awful. I have lots of spine problems, but have been spared spontaneous vertebral fracture so far. I hope you are being properly treated for it. Take care!

Thanks, Huw. Wish I was being treated properly for it, but a trip to A&E when I was in agony the weekend before last resulted in the doctor saying "it's only a muscle spasm - go home and take some codeine". Fortunately, my physio spotted it as a likely fracture some days later. Only just managed to get it X-rayed yesterday - have to wait till the end of next week for the results! That's our wonderful NHS.

So the medics don't seem too concerned. I'm just trying to be careful with it and hope for the best. Looks like the onset of osteoperosis.

Sorry, Zed, I've taken over your thread with my medical matters again ...

How dare you. This I supposed to be all about me, me, me.

I don't know how to put this, but I'm kind of a big deal, you know.*

She's the founder member of the We Hate Zed club.

Everyone else on here is a fully paid up member as well. We go on trips where we burn effigies of you or throw them off tall buildings (sometimes both at the same time).

Thank fuck for that. I don't know what I'd do if anybody ever, you know, liked me. I'm much more comfortable with hatred. Hate is such a comfortingly simple emotion.

Caroline, that doctor was an idiot. Even if it was a muscle spasm, you wouldn't treat that with codeine! For severe pain you need a strong analgesic - it just makes no sense bothering with weaker ones (I've learned this the hard way). I thought of osteoporosis when I read your first post above. My mum has it and according to my last MRI I seem to be getting it too. Are you seeing a pain management doctor? You might have a better chance of being well treated for pain with one. Good luck!

Huw - thanks.

Hey, how about you email me? It'd be nice to talk about pain without boring the good folks on here (I love you Zed ) about it. Email me on callag at blueyonder dot co dot uk if you like. I don't know your email address.

BTW my pain management doc isn't a lot better - though he was the one who put me on Lyrica.

Sorry to hear you might be getting OP too - it's not nice.
