Just (belatedly) spotted this... I'll be having this one.

Which stories are they, Joel? And... why's it called Do Not Pass Go?

Simon, the stories are:

'This Night Last Woman'
'No More the Blues'
'The Black Dog'
'Blue Mirror' (first published as 'Vocal, Bass')
'Rituals'

Why the title? Because I won't collect £200.

A launch event for the booklet is now planned. See http://www.ninearchespress.com/events.html for details. I'll be reading together with acclaimed Birmingham short story writer Alan Beard.

Please note this is not a 'launch party' in the hedonistic sense of genre fandom events: there will be no alcohol or food at the venue (though some of us will go on to the pub afterwards). It is, however, a free event and all are welcome.

Rumours that my uncle Bill will in attendance should not be credited. Remember, though, that if you attend the launch you will not have seen me and I will not have seen you.

I'd love to, but there's no chance - I have loads on in June and July, and can't afford to take the day off work anyway.

I hope it goes brilliantly, Joel.

SPAM ALERT

This booklet is now available from the Nine Arches Press website. It's a 44-page booklet printed on some of the best paper you'll ever handle, with a card cover the shade of human blood (that design meeting was interesting).

Also to note that I'll be posting out some copies to a few people tomorrow, apologies for the delay.

END OF SPAM

I do feel sorry for the Hormel Foods Corporation. These days, how do you market actual Spam?

And how do you promote the real thing, Spam with a capital S, when generic versions of spam are proliferating in every low-price supermarket and grocery store chain?

Mind you, it wouldn't be the first time that a shoddy generic product cobbled together from multiple sources was hailed as a unique and classic brand and an influence on the next generation.

Nine Arches sent me a copy this week - it's a very handsome little book. Their poetry chapbooks are very attractive too.

Thanks, Matthew – the attention to production quality in the review is particularly appreciated, as 9AP deserve more attention as a publisher (though they publish a lot more poetry than prose – very good poetry I may add).

By the way, did the 'twist' in 'Blue Mirror' work for you? Some readers have found it elusive (the story first appeared in Gary Fry's excellent magazine Fusing Horizons as 'Vocal, Bass'). In theory the ending makes it all clear...

I confess there was a brief double take and a glance back before it fell into place. But it worked very well.

Joel - I'm posting this here because I'm off work sick and can't access my only email account that seems to get on with yours.

My copy of this arrived today. Thank you, thank you, thank you...and the inscription made me smile.

I read it in the bath this afternoon, and absoltely loved it. 10/10. Utterly brilliant - even the couple of stories I'd read before seemed fresh and brand new. And "Rituals" is quite simply stunning.

Buy this. Buy it now. Not only is the fiction outstanding on every level, but the chapbook itself is gorgeous.

I read this in one sitting the other night. What a fantastic collection of tales. Brilliantly unpretentious, superbly written, gorgeously produced. I'd recommend this wholeheartedly.
