I have been wondering for a long while whether a precise chemistry of genres is possible. For example, mackinawite is an iron nickel sulfide mineral with the following formula: (Fe,Ni)1 + xS. Small amounts are pyrophoric: they spontaneously combust in air... What might happen if a writer blends (for instance) fantasy with realism with metafiction in comparable amounts in an analogous formula? Will there be some sort of story-detonation (metaphorical of course)? This idea fascinates me. I'm not talking about simple 'blind' fusions (Young Frankenstein blended horror with comedy). I'm talking about a PRECISE chemistry of genres... Any thoughts? |

Or alchemy? I think I've been trying to do this. Not vocalised it yet, though. Joe Meek's Telstar is better without voices. |

I've no idea, Rhys - my approach to writing is too intuitive, I think. |

>>>Joe Meek's Telstar is better without voices. Des, the guy who lives in the apartment above me was a member of The Tornadoes. Ray Randall, he's called. He's a cunt. |

Good job he didn't sing on it then with his voice. |

And indeed he wasn't yet in the group when they did Telstar, according to Wikipedia. |

Wasn't Heinz in the Tornadoes too? He had 57 isotopes apparently, Heinz did. (Subtly returning the conversation to chemistry...) |

Yes, Heinz was in the group when they did Telstar, and I think RR replaced him. |

Beanz Meanz Heinz... Telestar means geostationary communication possibilities... Coincidence? I think not. |

>>my approach to writing is too intuitive, I think.<< That would sum it up for me from a reader's perspective (rather than a writer's perspective). For me, there's a "magic" (chemistry? alchemy?) which occurs when what the writer has put onto paper somehow creates a "wow" reaction in the reader's imagination/mind. That's chemistry (or alchemy?) in writing as far as I'm concerned. Put the writer and the reader together and see what kind of reaction you get ... |

Yes, Caroline, I think you're right - the chemistry is between reader and writer in synergy rather than between seedbeds of meticulously measured elements within the author alone. |
