If I were a wealthy American collector I'd buy them! If the collection was $6,500 I'd be tempted (but unable to justify it). $650 and I would have probably already bought them (and be trying to resign myself to the fact that I couldn't buy anything else for the rest of the year).

I wonder how the bookseller justifies the asking price, e.g. why 65,000 and not 32,500 or 16,250.

I can't quite see how they arrive at that price anyway. To what could they have compared these letters? This is a unique item so unless you're selling at auction I can't see this is anything beyond greed.
Mind you, I used to buy books from Currey back in the 'eighties and they often seemed overpriced then.
