No, I'm not talking about the board. It's a Malcolm Bradbury supernatural mini-series on ITV in 1987. I remember quite enjoying it. Anyone remember it? IMAGINARY FRIENDS (3 x 55 minute series, from the novel of the same title by Alison Lurie). Director: Peter Sasdy. With Alison Steadman, etc. Thames TV for ITV. Shown 22-24 June, 1987. The travails of a sociologist who sets out to debunk a spiritualist cult. Drama adaptation of the novel by Alison Lurie, adapted by Malcolm Bradbury, Verena, Roger and Professor McCann are all interested in academic "truths", join a group of people who believe they are in contact with the people of the Planet Varna. |

They hold a seance to contact the alien being. He tells them that his realm is more tenuous than the Earth and moving through air for him would be like wading through water. One old dear remarks that the buns they made for him would be like rocks in that case. |

Hey Proto- I remember the series being broadcast, but missed it. Just caught the very end of it, which I remember being quite unsettling. Wasn't John Duttine in it? |

This is odd - I had an image of an alien invasion yesterday where the beings were like ghosts. Their ship was like a huge sun that made the world impossibly bright - for some people. Only the odd individual could see these aliens. They look like people in rubbishy costumes with big helmets that look a bit like a lidded eye - we don't see their faces. What they take is energy from things, the pleasure or discomfort. People near them just feel flat about everything. I think I've met them. |

'Is it on dvd'? (I could just look for the book) This gives me an idea. We find out about a series through little hints like yours, Proto, talk of old transmissions and slight memories. In the end it's on dvd in a box set, and then suddenly everyone remembers it and it's this big classic thing. It's happened with alsorts of things recently. |

Yes, John Duttine was in it. Five years after fighting the triffids. I seem to remember the general plot as being sociologist and psychologiest infiltrating the group to study the psychology of these groups, only to find that one of them becomes the mouthpiece for the alien being. |

We could pretend your dream was a series and see where that goes, Tony... |
