Most perfect? It's either perfect or it isn't. No levels of variation.

Yours,
Mr P Dant. :-)

"Most perfect? It's either perfect or it isn't. No levels of variation.

Well mr P dant - perfection does not exist in music so therefore the closest thing to perfect is the most perfect while your singing in the shower is the least perfect.

capiche?

Sorry, but the word does not allow for variation. "Unique" is the same - you can't have something which is "the most unique". If you say something is "the most perfect", you relegate comparators, making them imperfect. So it's logically impossible to claim something is "the most perfect", because by doing so you reduce all other things formerly considered perfect to something less than perfect, rendering the phrase "the most perfect" redundant.

But in the grand scheme of things, who gives a shit? :-)

That's real deductive reasoning, Gary. Very refreshing to hear someone airing it. I do give a shit about such things, because they are fun!

That old fake, Sherlock Holmes, never used real deductive reasoning. He used a combination of inductive reasoning and intuition.

Compared with you, he was an amateur.

I agree with you on the word unique - but for the word Perfect I don't. Perfection is an unattainable state in anything as subjective as discussion of music. therefore rather than using the clumsy phrase "The closest thing to perfect", if we use "the Most perfect" it means the same thing but in less words...

(I am winding you up, you know, Weber. As long as the phrase gets across what is intended - and this certainly does - it's fine by me. For instance, I think the phrase "tiny little", despite being a tautology, is actually quite useful for conveying smallness in a way that makes other phrases with an identical meaning seem cumbersome. So, praise be to grammatically inaccurate and yet practical language - long may it survive!)

The double negative, for instance: in the history of double negatives, has anyone in his or her right mind ever taken the statement, "I can't get no sleep" to mean, "You've been sleeping well"? I doubt it. Therefore, hail grammatically inaccurate yet practical language! It must stay!

One can have a universe of "unique" (one of a kind) objects. And in that universe, there can be something that is the "most unique."

For example: You could have three unique objects - a horse born with no tail, an asparagus pie, and something I've just invented called a "blixilblat,"a tiny battery-operated spray-dyer which turns your hair a rich hunter green.

There are plenty of horses around, and plenty of pies around - so those are two unique thing indeed, that horse with no tail (which is unique for being the only one on the scene at this moment in time, say, though there are still plenty of horses about), and that asparagus pie (which is absurd but possible and in the realm of common pies). But my "blixilblat" is the most unique of all, because there are no tiny battery-operated spray-dyers with a nonsense name that turns your hair green, in fact, nothing like that. Therefore, the "blixilblat" is indeed, "the most unique object" here, term used correctly.

Lovely song. I saw Eels about ten years ago and that was one of the songs they played. Live you really get the feeling that they're a hard-working band, physically and mentally tough, there's no sentiment or self-pity about them.

Only the Eels would put a weirdy beardy juggler on stage as their first support act...

The second support was slightly less than inspiring but the eels were amazing!!!! I saw them in Manchester a couple of years back where he/they did a mostly acoustic set (even had a guy playing tunes on a saw blade with a violin bow). Last night it was like they weren't the same band... just as good, but totally different - 4 electric guitars on stage and a very rock oriented set. My Beloved monster works surpringly well as a rock number... Highlights of the show were "The look you give that guy" and "This fresh feeling"

The look you give that guy can be found here - not quite as played last night but a fabulous tune. The Eels try to give different arrangemants when they play live. It works, keeps things real interesting
