Do you remember? And were you afraid?

DEATH RATTLES

Back in the mid-80s, a UK genre television show was aired on Channel 4 that pushed the boundaries of accepted broadcasting standards. As far as can be established, only six episodes were ever shown, but hardly anybody can remember seeing them.

Official records offer scant information, and no recordings of the episodes seem to exist. Rumours abound about brief clips on Youtube and water-damaged master tapes found in a media vault, but nobody has stepped forward with anything more solid than hearsay.

But six authors do remember watching the series, and their imperfect recollections form the basis of the stories in this book . . . You'll almost certainly never get to see the show in its original form, so this may be your only chance to experience . . .

. . . the notorious lost TV series.

In the mid-80s I was living in a rat-infested Walsall tenement (or rather a people-infested concrete rat settlement) and we had only one TV in the whole building. I saw every episode of this series but was too stoned, or too busy doing what I did to raise drug money, to recall the details clearly. I look forward to having the gaps filled in, or at least replaced with more interesting gaps. Come to think of it, that was all I was hoping for back then.

I think I only missed one episode, the one said to be directed by Escobada. I look forward to filling in that gap, well, all gaps, because my memory is fast losing its race with age.

I think I remember this Channel 4 programme. Was it the one with the sofa that ate someone? And at the end it turned out that they were on a prison planet?

(Joking aside, if anyone does remember that programme, do let me know what it was called. I've spent ages trying to identify it.)

Stephen you're not thinking about Dr Who & Terror of the Autons are you? That has a plastic armchair that eats someone.

You can't help but have fond memories of a TV show you only ever saw through a fog of late-night drunkenness.

I'm also ashamed to admit that I was a keen viewer, whenever the social whirl would permit, because this was another of those late-night 'pre-political correctness' TV shows which were guaranteed to contain explicit female nudity.

Sorry, everyone.

No, it definitely wasn't Who. I think it was a Canadian or Australian show, something like that. It was in suburbia, with lots of weird stuff happening. A bit like the bits of Time Bandits that happen in the present day. I wouldn't have been surprised if it had been an early Peter Jackson project, but I don't think it was.

I wasn't sure I'd seen it at all until a conversation at Fantasycon convinced me I hadn't dreamt or hallucinated it. It was only one episode, a pirate transmission at that, but I never forgot it.

Caught a couple of episodes on an old home video recording a mate of mine picked up at a car boot sale. Sadly he lost it shortly after (the video, not his sanity or anything) so I never got to make a copy of it... it bloody stayed with me, though.
