From the trailer it seemed that Oldman was really playing Alec Guinness rather than Smiley, which is just silly. I think Oldman's hugely over-rated (I can't think of even one truly outstanding performance he's given, so I'll watch the BBC version first. It begins with a five-minute wordless sequence of people arriving at a meeting carrying cups of tea. Now that's how you do dour. |

I liked him in Romeo is Bleeding, and he played another pretty disturbing psycho in Leon- aka The professional. I even liked his over the top Dracula performance, though that was probably Coppola's fault, mostly. Oh and Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead- and Prick Up Your Ears, another great film title... |

And he played a pretty haunting minor role as Lee Harvey Oswald in JFK- which is probably one of the best edited films, but that is beside the point here... |

Yeah, Karim, his best role was in JFK. His worst was in THE FIFTH ELEMENT, though to single out a "worst" element of that film takes some doing. |

And he played that insane, confused drug dealer in True Romance, a minor, but memorable role as well. I think the Fifth Element was mostly about the visuals, and it started him playing all these two dimensional hollywood villains for a time. |

Leon? Really? He he was fine in JFK. But outstanding? Has he done anything that merits the acolades that were showered on him before and after his move to Hollywood? Maybe Romeo is Bleeding (which I haven't seen)? I have to agree with Ebert's zero star review of R&GaD, I'm afraid. I think both he, and more especially Tim Roth, were damned lucky to get as far as they have wihtout being found out. |

It was in Romeo is Bleeding that made me really notice him Proto- I think it is my favorite role of his, and a great noir story too- worth watching. With Juliette Lewis, and perhaps, an even more memorable role from Lena Olin- amputee from hell. Tim Roth in the Tarantino films- and most recently in Funny Games. I guess they broke out at the same time- and Tarantino had something to do with it... |

Tim Roth in that Scottish fim, not Braveheart - the other one whose name I can't remember - he was great in that... |

You had me wanting to watch RiB until I hit the "Juliette Lewis" roadblock. My nightmare cast for any film: Demi Moore, Matthew McConahey (I know that's probably not how you spell it, but have you seen that ad where he jumps onto the sofa?), Juliette Lewis, John Hannah, Jim Broadbent (always basically the same), Matthew Modine (bland), Tom Cruise (same), Nathan Lane. |

Rob Roy was that Tim Roth film. Haven't seen that one. It did become the "not-Braveheart" film. |

Well worth watching Proto, despite the Lewis role, which is minor, but certainly an important part- it is also one of those films that benefits from a very effective Voice Over track- which usually doesn't work for me. His best role though... Rob Roy- Evil Tim Roth, if I recall... |

Tinker Tailor was an exercise in beige. I found it impenetrable. Even the actors looked befuddled. |
