Joe Pulver, Julia Grant and I have noticed something happening with facebook that makes us feel even more isolated....Joe on the Ligotti board....

'Ally Bird & I have learned that FB has changed its News Feed, so that by default, you can only see updates from people you've "recently interacted with." To change this, click on 'Account'...then 'Edit friends'... then the arrow next to 'Most Recent', or Most interacted..... and click .... ALL Friends! Most Importantly... Re-post this. Otherwise, only a few of your friends will actually see YOUR posts.

But when you do that and leave the page, it resets to "default" and once again you can only see "recently". As writers we are using a social group [FB] to spread info we hope readers will find interesting. Ally & I have become members of a protest group on FB we hope you will join, if you use FB.

http://www.facebook.com/jspulver#!/g...0831176691721/

There are many TLO users on Fb and when they post I would like to see what they have to say. I'm not 5, nor am I in school anymore and do not want to be limited in my choices or censored. If Simon Strantzas or Matt Cardin or Des Lewis post something on FB I want to know it. I do not want to have to go digging. I want the kind of freedom we have here on TLO.

Thanks for letting me rant.'

I want to see posts from people mentioned and others so we are trying to get word out...

Ally, you seem to be under the illusion that Facebook exists to serve the people who use it. It doesn't. It exists to make as much profit as possible. Complaints from users mean as much to it as ants in a cornfield mean to the lorries racing past on the motorway. If you offer them a few billion dollars to change the site's rules, they might do it. If you don't, why should they care? No doubt the change is based on market research that shows 95% of FB members don't remember or want to remember who they were 'friends' with yesterday or the day before, while last week is prehistory. If you want continuity, sanity, meaning and intelligence, what are you doing on a social networking site?

P.S. I hope it's obvious that my annoyance is directed at FB, not at you.

As was pointed out to me by Steve Duffy, this isn't the case. Your news feed displays in one of two formats: 'Top News' or 'Most Recent'. Top News (the default) is explained thusly: 'Top News shows popular stories from your favorite friends and Pages, many of which have gained lots of attention since the last time you checked. Since Top News is based on an algorithm, it uses factors such as how many friends are commenting on a post to aggregate content that you'll find interesting. It displays stories based on their relevance, rather than in chronological order.'

'Most Recent' is simply that: all the posts, links, etc. from your Facebook friends, from the most recent on back, chronologically. 'The Most Recent view shows updates from as many as 250 friends and Facebook Pages. If you have more connections, you can adjust the number to have more friends and Pages appear in Most Recent by clicking "Edit Options" at the bottom of your News Feed.' You can also, by clicking on 'Most Recent' and then the drop down arrow beside it, go into 'Edit options' at the bottom of that menu and decide who is in your Most Recent feed: either 'Friends and pages you interact with the most' or 'All of your friends and pages'.

If you go into your account and then 'edit friends' as Allyson describes above, all you're doing is seeing whether your friends list is displaying the friends you've more recently interacted with, or all your friends (alpha by first name). Changing it from one to the other affects that display only; it doesn't change your news feed.

So if you don't choose 'all friends' you get who fb says you can have. Thank you fb when I accept an invite I'd rather like to read/scroll through ALL friend's posts... that is how news and knowledge is spread. And I don't want to have to like/comment all the time to keep them.

And some people who had chosen 'all friends' posts originally still couldn't get them (it reverted back) and some then did...eventually.

Ally, they're still your friends. When you click "edit friends" it just shows the ones you're most likely to want to edit - ie, the ones you've most recently interacted with. They're all still there in your friends list - all you have to do is click "all friends" to see them. You're also the only one who sees what's in that "edit friends" window.

I know :>). It struck a few of us today how manipulative fb is being though. And say a friend did go off to another country etc. dropped off posting for a bit and then posted thinking he/she was getting through to all...they aren't. Not a good move from fb. I've heard people saying they didn't know their page had switched from all friends to interactive...they just wondered why they were getting fewer responses.

Finally found what I was looking for....

'Last week, Facebook changed the options in its news feed settings so users either “Show posts from: friends and Pages you interact with the most” or from “all of your friends and Pages.” SOME users have unknowingly been defaulted to the first option, causing lot of content to be hidden from them without their knowledge.

That's good. Glad it made sense in the end.

Does FB also tell us how to change our lives so the default setting isn't 'Shit happens?'

It seems to have changed...

'The Most Recent view shows updates from as many as 250 friends and Facebook Pages. If you have more connections, you can adjust the number to have more friends and Pages.'

Isn't that the old version?

I'll have a new slogan, Joel. Don't puppet me FB! Control freaks. Actually that leads me into a story I have to write for a Ligottian homage anthology...so all is not lost.

Some more on it...from the comments section.'hmmm, I would prefer they allow ME to decide who is most relevant to me. I have very close friends that are a hell of a lot further than 50 miles away that I care more about than the co-worker that lives in the same zipcode.

Thanks for the warning, Weber. I almost clicked thinking it was some kind of phishing trick or adware. I never suspected it could be so much worse.

FB is a good marketing and PR tool - these days, a writer who doesn't use this stuff to promote themselves is missing a trick.

I've had a couple of friends unsubscribe - it's a bit of a rigmarole but not too bad.
