Des, do consider a few strategic reprints:

'Clare' by John Keir Cross
'The Music of Erich Zann' by someone or other
'The Fiddler's Fee' by Robert Bloch

Does Tubby the Tuba count as classical music? I've always found something distinctly chilling in the line "And the whole orchestra began to laugh."

Sounds like I might want to concoct something. By the way, Des, if you care to expand to other types of music, like jazz, you should definitely consider "A Little Night Music" by Lucius Shepard.

Does that hoary old masterpiece from the sixties "Classical Gas" count? Or even the delightful and eminently avoidable "Hooked-On Classics" of the 1980s? And what about the Electric Light Orchestra? They had violins and were called an orchestra. String Driven Thing also had Violins, and Curved Air and Deep Purple played alongside an orchestra once.
Then there was the Mahavishnu Orchestra and Orchestral Manoeuvres in the Dark and what about "Roll Over Beethoven"...
Cheers

The greatest introduction to jazz, for a classical music fan, is 'Sketches Of Spain' by Miles Davis & Gil Evans. A thing of shimmering timeless beauty that straddles the boundary between both musical worlds quite magnificently.

Or is that just me talking bollocks again?

I think what I expect from stories is clearly shown on my new website:
http://classicalhorror.wordpress.com/
with lists of composers.

i.e. the stories should be based on unmistakeable classical music, not borderline or sample albums.

I do however love Jazz, and a lot of Pop Music, and Pink Floyd etc etc. I even like Jedward.

But this is a Classical Music based anthology of horror stories with no wiggle room. :-)

And I do not intend to include reprints (however famous or name-sales-strong).

Thanks, Terry.

I've been listening a lot lately to Zappa's late period collaborations with Ensemble Modern; 'The Yellow Shark', 'Everything Is Healing Nicely' & 'Greggery Peccary And Other Persuasions'. Some of the greastest classical music produced in the last 20 years.

Surely 'G-Spot Tornado' would provide plenty of wiggle room, Des?

Mind you, I reckon that show could be a good runner. Peter's gay - that's a good viewing hook. Felix has a foxy, talented sister who hides her light under a bushel - that's the human interest. Could be a winner.

A horror ballet if ever there was one. I mean, has ever music, story and action married together to more primally disturbing effect? 'Rosemary's Baby', 'Harvest Home', 'The Wicker Man', etc, owe it an indefinable debt of gratitude, imo.

All this talk of horribly beautiful classical music has me off to bed to listen to that self same ballet, a bit of Berlioz (you know the one), Mussorgsky (ditto), 'The Yellow Shark' & to calm myself down in the wee small hours (no, not Frank) 'Sketches Of Spain'... musical nirvana, without the willy.

Yes, I am just in and rather inordinately pissed!

There's a great section in Tolstoy's - I believe it's The Kreutzer Sonata, it might be "A Confession" - but it's where he goes on an attack against all "classical music," saying it stirs the spirits, listening to it; but just sitting there like a lump, there's no outlet for such stirring, and so it all only leads to frustration, depression, and dissatisfaction. Yes, Tolstoy hated classical music... and didn't like Shakespeare... and wasn't big on sex, either (well, late in life, at least)....

Jamie, the stories here:
http://nullimmortalis.wordpress.com/2011/03/09/a-pallid-wave-on-shores-of-night- by-adam-s-cantwell/

Or The Music of Erich Zann by HPL (though I'm hoping for stories that name real composers).

But all in all, the sort of story to be known as 'Classical Horror' will be determined by this forthcoming book - or that is my ambition for it.

Des, how strict are you bring with your definition of classical?

I want to write something about Leonin, Perotin, and the birth of polyphony, but am achingly aware that it's pre-classical music really. Would something connected to early polyphonic music count?

CLASSICAL HORROR ANTHOLOGY: 30 May 2012: Deadline Midnight tonight British summer time. I have had an enormous amount of great stories many of which would be worthy of inclusion in the book. So please do not be too disappointed if you should receive a rejection. In view of the large amount of work involved, there may be some delay in coming to various decisions. As has always been my wont since starting this paying market of Megazanthus Press in 2001, I do not comment on rejected stories, but merely notify rejection by email.

Words are Rorschach, too (you rejuiced the first 'h').
You mentioned classical music twice in your story 'The Holes'. The Beatles music has become classical music, meanwhile?
I notice a link above is defunct. The ToC of THE FIRST BOOK OF CLASSICAL HORROR STORIES and its individual wordage is now here:

Oh, Jusic. It's one of those days. Also my net connection is terrible - it keeps saying I haven't posted something when I have, so I keep sending things loads of times before it's registered. It makes me look like an idiot when I'm quite capable of doing it myself - hence 'Jusic'.
Yes, words too - I've been reading Beryl Bainbridge and keep zoning in and out of her work, like it's not linear, picking up on details here and there. I'm not sure she intended that. Her writing's odd, often tricky, sometimes vivid and others seemingly rambling and unfocussed. I like her though.
