I'm about 2/3rds of the way through this novel, by Adam Nevill, and it is probably the scariest book I've ever read. The atmosphere is incredible, and you really do feel like you're fighting for your life, hopelessly lost in an ancient Swedish forest. I really enjoyed his first, Banquet of the Damned, but so far this one is much better. Anyone else read this? Also, I've been exercising and watching what I eat for the last couple of months, to try and lose a few kilo's (7 so far!) and feel better in general. One of the pleasing side effects is how much I'm able to read in one sitting. I used to struggle to get through a 10 - 12 page short, now I'm flying through 30 - 40 pages and finding it much more enjoyable. | ||

It is superb isn't it Lincoln? Along with that McMahon bloke's 'The Concrete Grove' it's probably the best novel I've read in the genre this year (although that said I've not read the landlord's 'Seven Days Of Cain' yet...) Good on you with the diet and exercise thing. I'm trying to do the same, but finding it a bit of a struggle so far... | ||

The Ritual is fabulous and has one of my favourite endings from recent horror novels. I don't want to spoil anything, but I think it's safe to say that the novel has several significant shifts, which maintain excitement and suspense. Simon, with exercise, I find that it is best to structure it round something you enjoy. I'm currently training in Wing Chun Kung Fu, so everything else is helping to improve my strength and stamina as a martial artist. | ||

Thanks for recommending this! I've just ordered a copy to read on my Kindle - it looks like the kind of thing I'll enjoy. I have to be in hospital a lot over the next few weeks, so it'll be nice to have something good to read to take my mind off things. Congratulations for losing that unwanted weight, guys! I've been exercising/dieting lately as well, in a bid to get more healthy and feel better in general. I have lost 7.5kg so far. Just (!) another dozen or so kilos to go now... David, the wing chun sounds interesting. I trained in martial arts in my teens and twenties and would love to start again, but it's not really practical for me now with my spine problems (except maybe Taichi, and possibly Aikido, which I'm looking into). Anyway, good for you! | ||

THE RITUAL is probably one of the best horror novels I've read this year, to be honest. Absolutely taut. I'm not generally known for my effusive praise, but I loved it. Strange, as I didn't really get along with Banquet for the Damned, even though I admired a lot about it. | ||

Banquet for the Damned was OK... Apartment 16 was the one I admired rather than liked. The Ritual's the one where it all comes together, for me. | ||

There's a scene in the second half of the book where the central character goes up into the attic of a house...my God, it's one of the most frightening things I've ever read. Very subtle, beatifully understated. I loved it. | ||

I've just found out that The Ritual has been optioned by Stillking Films, who produced Casino Royale, The Illusionist, From Hell and The Bourne Identity. I thought all four were great in their respective genres, so I have high hopes for this!
