Hello all,

We have lots of content planned in support of our Halloween House of Fear event, which will run from 6-8pm on Friday 28th October at Waterstone's Liverpool One (tickets are £2- redeemable against any horror fiction bought on the night) and feature readings by Adam Nevill, Lisa Tuttle and Nicholas Royle. Full details of the event can be found here:

Today's content is an interview with Solaris's Jonathan Oliver, editor of House of Fear:

What do you think of the list of his favourite haunted house stories? How would your list differ?

Gary, I hope that you enjoy the anthology.

We have just announced a competition to win one of five copies of House of Fear, signed by the Editor, Jonathan Oliver:

She gives a good interview, with some insightful responses. I particularly agree with her favourite four tales:

‘My Death’
‘My Pathology’
‘The Wound’
‘Replacements’

One thing: that question about why write in the genre rather than a realist paradigm. I sometimes wish an author would just say, "Because it's cool" and leave it at that*. :-)

* Actually, I think China Mieville did come close to this, as did Jonathan Carroll.

PS I'd really like to ask a realist novelist why s/he writes in that paradigm and not in a genre one. I want the assumption inherent in the question - that somehow genre writers have to defend the decision not to work in a realist paradigm - switched around.

Today's haunted house-related content is a review of 1408 by Laura Bettney:

http://twistedtalesevents.blogspot.com/2011/10/1408-reviewed-by-laura-bettney.ht ml

It's a personal favourite of mine, due to some stunning performances and the mix of high production values and high concept, something I would like to see more often in contemporary horror films.

What are your thoughts about the film and/or the review?

Also, tickets are still available for Friday's House of Fear event. Hope to see some of you there.
