I've probably been a bit free and easy with the categories (and with my definition of 'British film'), but here are the ones which sprung immediately to mind: Crime: GET CARTER Horror: THE INNOCENTS Mystery: THE WICKER MAN Fantasy: THE TIME BANDITS Comedy: LIFE OF BRIAN Thriller: DEAD MAN'S SHOES Action: THE EAGLE HAS LANDED Drama: PERFORMANCE Art-house: IF... Science-fiction: SUNSHINE |

John - if I had to change about some of your choices to accommodate mine, I'd insert Where Eagles Dare in place of The Eagle Has Landed, and swap round The Wicker Man and The Innocents. Drama I'd probably choose Naked or Hunger. The Time Bandits though, definitely agreed there. |

Barbara has remarkably similar tastes to mine so I shall simply refer interested parties to her list as being pretty much what I would choose! |

Barbara - oh, yes, A Matter of Life and Death, how could I have missed that. Or The Third Man, or The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (Powell and Pressburger again). As I was saying to Stevie earlier, lists are insanely subjective. |

Mind you, here's a list of films that I saw in my youth that I remember fondly and which shows a side of British cinema that's usually swept under the carpet: Crime: Zapper's Blade of Vengeance Horror: Crucible of Terror Mystery: Who Done It? (starring Benny Hill) Fantasy: The Four Dimensions of Greta (in 3D) Comedy: She'll Follow You Anywhere Thriller: Sitting Target Action: Licenced to Love & Kill Drama: Scream and Die Art-house: Jubilee Science-fiction: Devil Girl From Mars |

Did anyone see BRIGHTON ROCK last night on BBC2. I prefer the original Richard Attenborough film, but I thought they did the Mods and Rockers scenes very well from what I remember them being like in real-time. |

Saw it last year in the cinema, Des, as it's one of my all-time favourite novels. The Boulting Bros version is vastly superior - a work of art compared to a soulless going through of the motions. I found this one lacked any of the passion and sense of dread of the source material. Yet another watchable but unremarkable Graham Greene adaptation, sadly. Even the idea of updating the story to 60s Brighton didn't quite spark as it could have done. |
