BTW, Review of Tony's story in the HA of HA from Adam S Cantwell:

Lovell's story "The Follower" more closely resembles a piece of psychological realism. Lovell uses a beautiful, involving style to detail several isolated moments in the long life of a book-haunted character. The anthology element is at its most subtle, and contributes unobtrusively to a portrait that inextricably weaves horror and haunting with more familiar emotions - loss, regret, fear for one's children and oneself - to create an example of that delicate beauty to which the best of horror fiction has unique access.

Very nice! Reminds me of those great covers of pulps and mysteries from the 60's/70's (80's too) that utilized still life photography.

That's a striking cover, Tony. It gives a sense of both warmth and creepiness. I love the ochre/amber colours and the whole feel of the image.

It reminds me of the kind of instantly striking pulp horror covers that used to hook all our attentions back in the good old days of the 60s, 70s & early 80s.

A horror book needs a potent cover image to enshrine itself in the reader's mind. Something that draws one's attention by its hint of dark mysteries within and then, each time one returns, by commenting with cumulative power on all the terrors that the reader has experienced. That has always been my contention.

Anything is better than the anodyne crap excuses for covers that publishers churn out now in all genres. Has anyone seen what they've done to the likes of Stephen King, Clive Barker, James Herbert or Ray Bradbury ffs!!!!

Stevie, I promise you, I'm not being patronizing or making a joke: I'd love to see what you think are - oh, say, your list of? - the very best such covers you've seen.

Thanks to the internet nowadays, you don't have to paste the actual photos here: you can easily locate and link a pic of any book that's ever been printed. But really, I've seen so many of these fantastic covers from ages gone by, and like you, I truly lament their no longer being around. I'd love to see the ones you think are some of the best.....

"you can easily locate and link a pic of any book that's ever been printed"

Er, you mean any book whose cover has been scanned and the image placed online. Which might be 1% of them, referring to the 20th century alone, and virtually nothing from previous centuries.

Superb work, Tony. Looked good when you showed me the in-progress snaps. But the finished article's excellent.

The typeface does make it look more retro than it otherwise would be, though.

Although it is very different, Tony's cover above positively resonates with this Elastic Press cover by Dean Harkness shown here:

You know, Joel, I just assumed they were all there already, because of the fact I see so many as it is. Duh, on my part. That would be called the logical fallacy of... of... something or other....
