I think we may have discussed these before, but here's something to reflect upon if you get bad reviews on Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Haunting-House-Penguin-Modern-Classics/dp/0141191449/ref =sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1319639631&sr=1-1 Weirdly, some of the one-star reviews are much like ones I've had, down to specific objections. |

In a one-star review I got on Amazon for GROANING SHADOWS, the reviewer admitted to not having read past the first story as I'd made a factual error in it. |

"as scary as a bag of old hair clippings" writes one reviewer. I bet M R James could have made that terrifying. |

There's a fun website which collates one-star Amazon reviews for films/books/albums etc which are otherwise viewed as classics. You can find it here: http://www.cynical-c.com/category/ycpe/ |

Dear lord, I hope not! "After seeing the new released 1999 movie The Haunting I decided to buy the book. The book was nothing like the movie at all. Totally very boring, large vocabulary of words and totally meaningless to people who want to be entertained with what they read instead of trying to figure out what is written. Halfway through the book I decided to just finish it to see how it ended and the book had nothing to do with how the movie was written. So just skip this book and see the movie. The special effects in the movie outweigh the words on paper." |

We're told that Amazon reviews have far more impact on sales than reviews in the most prestigious journals or newspapers. Amazon is a prime example of how the fucking internet is destroying literary culture. |

Simon, in respect of the Amazon poster you quoted, I hereby - for one time only - revoke my opposition to capital punishment. |

Fucking aye, he did!? Simon: That's really terrible, but alas, there will always be those who are proud of their illiterater--illiteralness--illiterally--the fact that they can't read. |

"as scary as a bag of old hair clippings" writes one reviewer. I bet M R James could have made that terrifying. "A Romance of Certain Old Hair Clippings", perhaps. Quick, get Rhys on it! |
