Forgive the crass self-promotion all, but I hope some of you will be interested to hear my third collection, NIGHTINGALE SONGS, is now available from Dark Regions Press. I'm hopeful you'll find it worth investigating.

You can read more about it at Dark Regions (where, of course, you can also preorder it)

http://www.darkregions.com/nightingale-songs-by-simon-strantzas/

But if you'd like a little more info, you can read this wonderful review at The Speculative Fiction Junkie:

http://www.speculativefictionjunkie.com/2011/11/review-nightingale-songs.html

Lastly, for those curious, my own website has been updated in honour of the new work:

http://www.strantzas.com

I'm really proud of this one and so far the behind-the-scenes response has been great. I hope anyone who tries it agrees.

My best,
Simon Strantzas

I've put my money where my mouth is (always a strange experience, not to mention taste) and (pre-)ordered - looking forward to it, Simon.

If you still haven't ordered, don't forget the PREORDER SPECIAL: order the book while still in preorder phase and receive $5 off the retail price ($40 instead of $45)!

I also did a short interview in the Dark Regions newsletter about the book (in case someone here doesn't subscribe).

Looks good, Simon. Will there be a trade hardcover or paperback?

Congrats, Simon. I loved your first two collections (although I only have the Humdrumming version of BtS) so I'll be getting this.

Thanks, guys. I really appreciate it.

Joel: There is a trade hardcover available to order now (that's the $40 preorder deal). I imagine, in a few months, once the current hardcovers go, a trade paperback will be announced as well.

Steve: The Dark Regions edition of Beneath the Surface has additional stories, including a 6K afterword! I tried to make it worthwhile for anyone who bought it again. (Frankly, I think it's the better edition.)

Sorry Simon, I was missing the point – as the hardcover is a signed limited edition I assumed there would be a separate trade hardcover, but if there isn't it doesn't matter, what matters is that there should be a trade edition to reach lots of new readers.

A new book from Strantzas? Cool!

>>>what matters is that there should be a trade edition to reach lots of new readers

But are trade editions that cost such a lot of money ever likely to reach lots of new readers?

Not unless they're published by a massive publisher who has a huge advertising budget. Small press books sell to the same people, over and over again, because nobody else knows about them.

I should make the editions clear here, just so there aren't any further misunderstandings.

There are two editions currently available for order:
1) a super-limited leatherbound, slipcased hardcover for $99
2) a less-limited "trade" hardcover for $40 (it will go up to $45 when the book starts to ship)

In time, no doubt once the above numbers dwindle, likely we'll see:
3) a trade paperback at a price around $18 I suspect.

Essentially, there's a collector's hardcover, a "I just like hardcovers" hardcover, and an eventually "I can't afford a hardcover" paperback that one can buy.

The hope, of course, is that the paperback will be the tool to spread the gospel of the book, and the hardcovers are there merely for those that like them, or like my fiction enough to want to read it early.

Clear as mud?
