One of my favourite ever anthologies (and *not* because I happen to be in it) - see my own RTR of it - has had a new review:

I've just read your RTR, Des (I never read reviews of books that I plan to review myself before I do so, lest they affect my perception)

Extraordinary depth, as always.

And it's certainly my anthology of the year, if a year late.

I hope you've since rectified the lack of Mark West in your reading. If not, his tale in "Ill At Ease" is another peak.

You're welcome, Stu. Great story.
That opening section of dialogue where he's gently harangued by a colleague for claiming he's got flu, while he repeatedly insists it's just a cold to her deaf ears, is priceless.

Glad you liked it. I've had a few conversations like that in real life. The most recent was earlier this year when I was explaining to my female osteopath that I was a bit tender because the "cold" I was suffering from had turned out to be preventing my right lung from pumping out enough oxygen which caused the right side of my body to lock up in pain whenever I laid down. Like an idiot I had insisted it was just a cold and had to be frogmarched to the GP who promptly prescribed antibiotics and painkillers. I sheepishly admitted to my osteopath that I had been so slow on the uptake to realise something was wrong because I'd been lulled into a false sense of security by the fact that the initial flu-like symptoms -- chills, loss of appetite and sleeping most of the day -- cleared up within 24 hours and so I was convinced that it was a false alarm and that I just had a regular cold after all. Of course the only thing she actually heard was "flu" and she immediately started jeering, "Man-flu! Man-flu!"

A former army medic once told me that women have, as a rule, stronger immune systems than men- they have to, as they carry the biological future of the species. So viral infections hit men harder. Apparently it also gives women a better chance of surviving the aftermath of a nuclear, biological or chemical weapons incident. Cheery thought... if that's true, it would explain a lot about differing attitudes...

I believe a compulsory bit of parenting should be to have all new born babies ceremonially dipped in a septic tank to protect their future health and promote the hardiness of the species. I once suggested this to a doctor friend, who advocated a mixture of brandy and milk as a pick-me-up every morning, but have yet to hear back from him.

Sparta, Northern Ireland style... nah, just read out a selection of your top-10 lists, Stevie! If they survive that they'll survive anything.

Thanks for the kind words, Matt. It is a great book, especially considering how quickly Gary managed to pull it all together.
