Hey Everyone: Much news this week:

My original--and unproduced--screenplay THE UGLIES, a screenplay that is, in its way, about the 99% is now up for sale via the Kindle: http://www.amazon.com/Uglies-Original-Screenplay-ebook/dp/B0074D58K8/ref=sr_1_3? s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1328567400&sr=1-3

And to make that sales pitch go down a mite easier, here's a piece I wrote on Hammett Day at the Film Noir Fest in San Francisco: http://tbdeluxe.blogspot.com/2012/02/noir-fest-x-day-by-thomas-burchfield.html

Thanks for reading and for your support, as always.

Hey! No fair, Thomas! I'm gonna put MY scripts up on Amazon now!

But seriously... how did you wing the formatting? I just assumed it would be too difficult to be worth it... I guess I'll have to check yours out and see then....

Hi Craig:

I use a distribution company called Bookbaby: They distribute your manuscript to four or five online books stores (Kindle, Nook, iPad, Sony, etc.) for US$ 99. They're a new company and still working out their kinks, but they're pretty good. They can reformat the screenplay for you, though it costs another US$50. They also have a cover design service, which is eh . . . .

What I do is reformat the script myself in Word like a traditional script for a stage play, instead of Hollywood format:

Fred (angrily): Eat my shorts!
Bob (frostily): Never! They taste terrible!

No centering, tabbing, or outre formatting. Keep it simple as possible.

Hollywood will never buy these things anyway, so my main concern is that they be readable for mainstream readers.

Hope that helps!

Thomas

Fascinating, I will have to check that out... thanks, Thomas. I can only assume they do the bare bones, and you're left with the "promotion" part of it all, right? The getting-the-word-out-there?

Yes, the e-readers aren't keen on odd formats. Nor on pdfs they say you can load in yourself, or at least the Nook when I tried it wasn't - I think it's to discourage that, and encourage purchases only.

Craig:

Yep, marketing is still author's responsibility. You can hire others to help you with that, but that's a pretty penny. I have paid for a little advertising with some interesting results, which I'll take up on my page sometime soon.
