One of the very few journalists for whom I had genuine respect was killed today in Homs, Syria, by the shelling she'd been reporting on. Colvin was a courageous woman who, time and again, went into danger to report on it. Her death is a sad loss. |

Yes, I saw that on the BBC news site - very sad. I was only remarking to my husband the other day, when the BBC reporter had gone into Homs, just how much these journalists and camera operators put themselves in danger to make sure the world doesn't forget about these kinds of atrocities. Many of these journalists are very brave people indeed. Marie Colvin and her photographer colleague (and isn't there another reporter in a critical condition?) are good examples of that. |

She seemed like a hell of a woman! Shocking news that we can only hope will do some good over there. This whole situation in Syria, and with Russia and China squaring up to the west, and Iran cosying up to Pakistan and Afghanistan and making noises about blockading the Gulf is the most ominous set of political circumstances facing the world in my lifetime. This could well develop into the worst threat to world peace since the Cuban Missile crisis if things continue escalating as they are. These are terrifying times and we need a lot more fearless individuals dedicated to the truth, like Marie Colvin, to have any chance of surviving them. |

She was very brave and never left those people in East Timor that time. http://www.guardian.co.uk/media/2012/feb/22/marie-colvin |
