Then it doesn't count as an ear worm, at least in my definition. (Yesterday, it was "Don't Give Up on Us Baby" by David Soul. I notice they often attack me in grocery stores, where they often lie in wait to infect unsuspecting shoppers. Pernicious, I say! |

Saw someone I used to work with and disliked intensely on my way home from work and for at least an hour, this was my earworm/mindworm whatever you want to call it. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUXj2i0PsTQ All in all a good day for internal music. |

Today in the hypermarket. A little girl who cannot have been more than four years old was either singing or yelling "Sex! Sex! Sex! Sex!" The shoppers tried very hard to ignore her, and the embarassed mother smiled apologetically. I'm not making this up. |

I was at a karaoke fundraiser one time for a theatre group and someone allowed their 6 and 7 year old daughters to get up and sing Sex on the Beach... Not the most appropriate song |

And it isn't even Christmas! I just can't shake the Village People's YMCA out of my head. I've been like this now for over a week! I blame that damn advert on TV for confused.com and the fact that I needed to try to remember to sort out new car insurance. But now I've got my new insurance and I just want to stop that song going round and round in my head all the time. Help!! |

No problem, Caroline... "Ag-a-doo-doo-doo, push pineapple, shake the tree Aga-doo-doo-doo, push pineapple, grind coffee To the left, to the right, jump up and down and to the knees Come and dance every night, sing with a hula melody." One more time for the world... [At this point the muffled report of a high velocity rifle shot from the roof opposite was heard followed by a sharp crack of glass.. and silence...] |

Mine today is "Mc Arthur Park", which needs no introduction. I recently read in an old music magazine that the Harris version was recorded in three takes, by the studio cats who played on Beach Boys records, no less. You don't have to like the music to see that is a tour de force of some magnitude. |

Ah, the BFS and BBC sites are doing strange things for me too - so it's definitely my computer. Thanks, Ramsey. When this has happened before with the BFS and BBC site, a bit of computer maintenance - running a malware programme, etc - has sorted it out for me. I'm off to do some computer maintenance now ... (I might be able to see what Weber's mindworm is then!) Sorry for going OT! |

I don't know if it's because of the Adrian Mole book putting my brain back into early 80s mode, but I've had the "Um Bongo Um bongo they drink it in de Congo" tune on an almost constant loop today. The worst thing about it is I actually know the lyrics still... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wYj5o4kQsXs I hope that right - I can't view it from work. |

I totally buy into the concept of memes. I see them as types of behaviour and ideas that spread throughout cultures by imitation and mass acceptance until they come to be regarded as the norm. New memes are always forming and those that accrete enough unconscious support among the populace survive and grow. In these days of mass media technology and instant global communication memes have the ability to replicate themselves like never before due to the pressure we all feel to conform. What we are seeing is a form of cultural and behavioral natural selection at work. I despise the idea of memes and strive to stay my own man in all things but no man is an island and mobile phones and the internet have made us all as porous as sponge when it comes to cultural evolution. |

Great choices, Weber! You know, just recently, I rediscovered the joys of the Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of This) (1983) album... and like a mind worm, it was just not ever leaving the spin cycle. Weber, go to youtube too: all the B-sides/demos/outtakes (and there are many!) have been collected there, some of them quite rare... some of them better even than the stuff that made it! Yup. When I think of George Orwell's 1984 too, now, I think immediately of Eurythmics.... |

The only song by the pair I can stomach is "The Boxer". The sadness engendered by the cycle of chords on which they sing la-la-la takes on threatening, almost cosmic proportions when the heavy bass note enters near the end. A bit similar to but less devastating than the beginning of the Moody Blues' "Question". |

I've got a few lines from a Pnk Floyd song that I can't identify today. I know it's from the Division Bell album (or possibly from Delicate Sound of Thunder), just from the general sound of it but I have no idea what the song is. The lyrics are The grass was greener The air was cleaner the sky was brighter(?) and my mind won't let me get past that bit. Can anyone tell me what it is? |

Just a completely straightforward cover of Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody"... against a rather Lynch-ian nightmare, I must say.... http://youtu.be/-LoiblDKBDc |

I dunno if this will be of interest to anyone, but this label has a 50% sale on until the end of January if you use the code tympanik2014 when buying. Most digital albums work out around £3 using it. It's electronic music ranging from the sombre and atmospheric to glitchy and dancy. I've ended up discovering a load of new music and spending probably more than I should on albums. My particular favourite finds are Subheim, Stendeck and Ad*ver*sary. |

My current ear/mindworm - Body and Blood by Clipping. I can only describe it as industrial hip-hop, with a horror theme. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3ZAPtFRpuu8 |

I saw these guys supporting Dark Horses a few weeks ago and thought they'd be worth a recommendation, considering the band formed at an HP Lovecraft appreciation society and have been described as "A unique imagination filled with Freudian symbols and Jungian archetypes, cult cinema, fairy-tales, classic literature, high art and low art. With their music Natalie Pryce create a world to slip into: a world with raging hallucinatory characters and impossible nocturnal cities where magick is real and reality is never taken at face value… it’s music about life and death, love and sorrow, sex and dreams that leaves you still listening well after the songs are finished." http://nataliepryce.co.uk/music/ |
